Closed Voting Short story contest #169 Theme: "Last Card"

Discussion in 'Bi-Weekly Short Story Contest Archives' started by GingerCoffee, Feb 9, 2015.

    Short Story Contest # 169
Theme: "Last Card" courtesy of @DarkTesseract.

Contest story entries can be found HERE.

We have four excellent entries in this contest. The winner will be revealed in two weeks and the winner thread will be stickied until the next contest's winner is crowned. No more entries are allowed in this contest.

Entries are listed in the poll in the order posted.

Voting ends in two weeks, Sunday, Feb 22nd, 2015 ~5:30 pm Pacific Time.

I encourage authors to vote. While it is controversial, it remains acceptable in the short story contest to vote for yourself. I encourage you to vote honestly. In the name of good sportsmanship only vote for yourself if you have read all the other stories and given them your honest evaluation.

Consider how the author has responded to the theme, as well as the quality of the writing and overall impression of the story in making your decision.

These stories were so good I didn't bother entering mine as it would have surely lost. Read for pleasure, learning, and to vote.

Darn darn darn. Each of the stories has different elements that make them winners. The question is, what is the more important element to base my choice on?

Couple more days to vote, folks. :)

Oops, you really should wait until voting is over before comments that might influence the voting.

Not enough voters. Do I need a 'Ben Affleck's full frontal is photoshopped' thread to get some attention? ;)

And the winner is: @Lancie with The Pact.
Coming in second was @DeadMoon with The Canary and the bad men

And now the thread is open for comments. I thought all the stories were good. I voted for The Canary and the bad men because I thought it was the most original. I thought Dark Dry Land was excellent writing, maybe the best of the four, but I had trouble finding the story.

And I actually thought The Pact and A Complete Set were equally good but clearly other readers found The Pact to be the better of the two. I thought they were both interesting stories and well written.

Thanks for the comments, @GingerCoffee. I agree that my story isn't really a story, but I'm glad you liked the writing.

I voted for The Pact because it fit the theme and was really well-written. I couldn't get into A Complete Set, personally. I thought there was too much exposition off the bat, but the writing was good. And I agree that The Canary and the Bad Men was very original. I liked the ideas, but I wanted the characters to be more 3-D in their portrayals.

    Congrats to the winners!

The Canary and the Bad Men was a brilliant idea, and they were all well written. I thought the theme was quite a tricky one (that was my third go) so well done to everyone :)

I has a lot of fun writing for this contest and am looking forward to more of them. Following a set theme really makes you think of new ideas and directions to take.

All good stories. Liked the nostalgia in Dark Dry Land but I really liked The Canary and the Bad Men - Wish I had voted. But glad at least I checked out the thread and read it. Good story, DeadMoon! Original too.

I really enjoyed the stories, too. I voted for The Pact (congrats @Lancie!). I thought it was clever and very well written. :) I leaned away from the canary story (even though it was a wonderful story!) because of a few editing errors. If there are several stories worth voting for, it will come down to any grammatical errors or editing issues I might see. *(if anyone ever sees them in MY stories, please call them out! :) ) Bravo to all the writers! They were all an interesting read!

Editing errors is definitely something I really need to work on, right next to bad spelling.
