    Short Story Contest FAQ

Discussion in 'Bi-Weekly Short Story Contest Archives' started by Gannon, Feb 20, 2008.

    Q: Where do I enter?

A: Post an entry as a reply to the stickied theme thread.

    Q: Where do I vote?

A: Once a contest has come to a close, all entries will be put to a vote and the winner stickied.

Q: Do I have to follow the theme closely?

A: Your piece must follow the theme - how closely is down to your artistic interpretation of the theme. Adventurous and imaginative pieces should score well in the voting. Off-topic pieces will be dealt with on a entry-by-entry basis to determine elligibility. In weeks with high levels of entries off-topic entries may not be entered into voting.

Q: Is their a word limit?

A: The word limit is 500 - 3000 words unless otherwise stated in the stickied theme thread. There is a ten percent leniency above and below the upper and lower word limits, respectively. Please try to stick within these limits. Any piece outside of the suggested limit may still be entered into the contest but flagged as such and voters encouraged to consider adherence to word limit in making their decision. In weeks with high levels of entries, those that do not follow the word limit may not be entered into voting.

    Q: Is the contest weekly?

A: No. It is biweekly - that is to say, every second or other week to allow for maximum entries.

Q: What is the entry deadline for a contest?

A: Two weeks after it is first posted. Contest run for 14 days and have the deadline stated clearly in the stickied theme thread.

Q: Can I use profanity and / or other sensitive material?

A: This is a family site so please be careful. If your piece demands such material then use it sparingly and effectively. Pornographic and overly violent material is strictly not allowed and could result in a forum ban.

Q: Can I vote for myself?

A: Yes, though I would hope you wouldn't. It is possible to vote for yourself, but I would hope in the name of good sportsmanship that you would only do so if you have read all the other stories and given them your honest evaluation. You gain nothing if you base your vote solely on how you feel about the author or whether you have personally invested time and effort in the story. In the end, your conscience is your only judge.

Q: What if there is a tie in voting?

A: Where two pieces tie, then both pieces win - joint winners. Where more than two pieces tie, I will decide upon an outright winner from the tied pieces, basing my decision on adherence to the theme, word limit, originality and overall enjoyment.

Q: Is an extract from a larger story an acceptable submission?

A: Please try to make your story complete and have an ending rather than be an extract from a larger one.

Q: Should I include a title and word count?

A: Please remember to give your piece a title and give its word count in brackets at the top of your story.

    Q: Can I solicit votes?

A: Absolutely not. Anyone found doing so will be dealt with strictly by the moderators.

Q: Is their a prize for winning?

A: Sadly there are no prizes but honour on offer. The winning entry will be stickied until the next competition winner.

    Q: Are fanfic-style entries permissable?

A: Yes. Just make it clear what you are fanfic'ing.

    pt2.

Q: Can I edit a submission once submitted?

A: Yes, but please do not change the whole essence of the piece in order to try and be just and fair to other entrants.

Q: Can I edit a submission once entered into the voting?

A: No. At the voting stage entries cannot be altered.

Q: Where can I submit suggestions for the next contest's theme?

    A: Here: http://www.writingforums.org/showthread.php?t=8493

Q: What if I want to enter the contest and submit my piece for critique?

A: Enter your piece into the contest and once voting has come to a close on that contest then post your story in the Review Room forums of the site, after having met the reviewing quota to do so.

Q: Where is my old submission?

A: All old submissions can be found in the short story archives http://www.writingforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=69

Q: What if I have an additional question not contained here in the FAQ?

A: Please give me or one of the moderators a PM or VM and we would try to assist.

    Thanks and happy contesting. :)
