Sites with free Photos for cover art?

Discussion in 'Cover Design' started by peachalulu, Jun 19, 2014.

Does anyone know of any good websites with free photos. I've found morguefile, haven't totally checked it out but I've been noticing a trend - the sites pretend to be free but want you to sign up and pay monthly or packaging fees. Even is the pictures aren't free does anyone know of a site where you pay per picture no strings attached?

Did you try Googling for "free images". It appears there are numerous hits.

The problem with so-called free sites is that they're free for personal use only (like for your desktop). Try putting them on your book and you are asking for problems.

Sorry can't help with recommendations, though.

I don't think I'd recommend using photos from any of the free sites for a moneymaking business, because you can't be confident of the provenance of the photos, and if it turns out that someone uploaded a photo that wasn't copyright-free, there's no one that you can hold responsible. This would be especially bad if you print on paper, so that if someone ordered you to stop using a photo you'd have to throw out the books.

Edited to add: To pay for a photo, you could Google the phrase

    stock photo

though I don't know how you find out which sites are trustworthy and which are dubious.

Thanks everyone! That's what I thought. I've been researching it but I thought maybe I overlooked something. It's amazing the sites you can overlook just by typing in the wrong search words.

    Here's some of my favorites.

    http://pixabay.com/en/ (All public domain)

Wikimedia commons http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Main_Page (has half public domain, some not, check the license)

https://archive.org/ (again, half public domain, check the license)

http://digitalcomicmuseum.com/ (All public domain comics. But the images are very raw. They need to be cleaned up before you can use them.)

Also, if you live in the USA, anything the government creates as part of it's duties is in the public domain. I love the free images from Ansel Adams back when he worked for the government
http://www.unclesamsphotos.com/ (This is a directory site)

PM me if you want more. I keep a list of around 200 sites with different licenses.

Loads of free photo sites with explicit statements about unlimited usage. Don't let paranoia about provenance hold you back.

    This is my 2 cent:
    http://www.freeimages.com/
    http://www.rgbstock.com/

I used some photos from these sites for my open source PHP project, and mentioned the photographer on the site.
