    Getting books for christmas!

Discussion in 'Discussion of Published Works' started by Albirich, Dec 17, 2013.

Okay, I want some books, I think it'll do good for my writing to read more than A Song of Ice and Fire.

Any suggestions to some dark fantasy ? I have looked some on "The Lies of Locke Lamora" by Scott Lynch. It is the first of the series "Gentleman Bastard" anyone read this or..?

I really have no idea where to look or what to look for. (or well, I know the genre as preferred above, but I don't know of good authors or anything as such)

Edit: How about Promise of Blood by Brian McClellan?

It doesn't have to be like really gritty and dark, as long as it isn't some cliche fairytale :)

It's not really dark fantasy (more historical one) but I think people who like dark fantasy might love his books: Guy Gavriel Kay. The Lions of Al Rassan is one of my favourite novels ever, and I'm also a big fan of A Song for Arbonne and Tigana.
Both entertaining and very clever stories, with beautiful writing and very meaningful themes.

Also, did you read Rothfuss' Kingkiller Chronicle? It's heroic fantasy with great characters and beautiful storytelling.

Historical-ish would be nice too, they are often realistic and somewhat gritty due to the realism ( I think? :D)

I haven't read anything xcept A Song of Ice and Fire...kinda got in to reading a year ago. But I'll check out the ones you've listed.

If you like grittier fantasy, check out Joe Abercrombie.

Said a lot by others, but if you haven't already, check out The Dark Tower books by Stephen King.

The Iron Druid Chronicles by Kevin Hearne. Original, great characters and plots, some dark moments, but not really dark fantasy.
