The Green Lantern Corps is an intergalactic police force organized by the Guardians, a race of nearly immortal blue-skinned beings whose home world is Oa. Oa itself was destroyed, along with the Guardians, but both have been restored. Green Lantern's power comes from willpower channeled through the ring, which is recharged remotely from the master Battery on Oa. The ring's power used to be ineffective against anything yellow, due to a necessary impurity in the ring. That impurity was actually an intelligent malevolence, which is now purged from the rings and the master battery, but is at loose in the Universe.

Also, the nature of the artifacts created by the ring reflect the personalities of the GL.

Yup. Test pilot Hal Jordan's artifacts are more often modelled after mechanisms, Kyle Raynor's tend to be more imaginative and intricate, Guy Gardners tend to be choppier, more direct. There was an issue about a year or so ago that emphasized those personality-related differences, and it's consistent with what I've seen in the magazine.

 

What artifacts are you referring to?

 

The artifacts are the manifestations that are emitted from the ring, whether it be an oversized green shovel or a green ogre to pound on the villain, or a giant green air pillow to cushion a falling civilian's landing. Green Lantern's costume is itself an artifact, one that maintains itself subconsciously even if GL is stunned.

 

Oh, those artifacts. Yeah, just proving how awesome the GL Corp. is.

 

Therefore the green lantern is not the green lantern but the green lanterns. So there is not a green lantern.

At nearly any given time, there is only one Green Lantern assigned to Earth (actually all of sector 2814). Currently, Hal Jordan is our Emerald Crusader.
