    I've often seen quantum entanglement used for instantaneous communication in sci-fi.

    Me too. I read in a science article once (years ago) that there were reasons that using the effect to transmit information would not be possible. I don't know if that's still the viewpoint. Maybe because you can't know the state until observation and its random?

    Last I read it is basically because you need to compare the two particles; by looking at one you just have random data. That is obviously a very simplistic answer.
