    system of groups?

Discussion in 'Word Mechanics' started by MelFyre, Feb 6, 2016.

I can't even pull the thought together enough to know the word for what I'm looking for so here it goes . . . I'm looking for systems of order or something like that - for example the greek alphabet that shows order / hierarchy / structure beyond just being an alphabet.

    Does this even make sense?

Could you explain the example more. I'm not sure what's being referred to.

    Hello, thanks for your consideration!

So in some books I've read they structure 'chain of command' or hierarchy of groups (say for civil defense in a fictional setting ) by labelling groups as alpha, beta, etc. I'm considering a similar situation but was looking for other options than the same ol' same ol'.

I would have thought organizational would fit, don't understand the relation to proprietary, will have to look at my dictionary.

Whenever I work off organizational I usually pull business structuring which doesn't have the right feel - but I'll take anything you can give me to work forward from.

    Thanks for looking!

"organizational" - sounds/feels basic and corporate and 'cold'.
"proprietary" - sounds/feels historic and social and 'warm'.

It all depends on what your writing intention is . . . and the ambiance you want to create. Words convey deeper emotions than their dictionary definitions, thus writers choose their words very carefully. :)

You mean like a method of ranking? Honestly I'm not super sure what you want.

Maybe biological taxonomy? Life, domain, kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, species.

Star brightness classifications? Brown dwarf, red dwarf, white dwarf, dwarf, subgiant, giant, bright giant, supergiant, hypergiant.

Layers of the Earth's crust or atmosphere?

Do re mi fa so la ti?

Like I said, I'm not sure I know what you're talking about, so I dunno if this is any help.

This does help greatly actually - it gives me a point of assessment to see what's going to fit and feel right and maybe guide me to the best set-up, so thank you!
