Let's say you have a row of shops, and all along that row is like a continuous outcrop that forms a shelter from the rain so that window shoppers don't get wet. What would that be called? It acts like an awning, but it's made from concrete and runs the entire length of the building the shops are built into to.
Arcade ? Precinct ? Generally the row of shops is a 'parade' , but i'm not sure what the ongoing canopy is called
Yup, I'm with arcade. The root is arc and refers to arched structures as the initial form, but the awning form would be the architectural cousin of same. Here's a rather medieval looking example, alive and well in modern times, that is defo an arcade.
The funny bit is that I have a scene that takes place in a very narrow street where the awning arcade from both sides pretty much almost touches in the middle, that's how narrow the street is. Looking back on it, I realize that I gave an awfully circuitous description because the word arcade just didn't come to mind. Going to have to revisit that scene.
