How would you do this? "Jim wrote a book that is 197 pages" or "Jim wrote a book that is one-hundred-ninety pages"
197 pages. I can't be sure what the limit its but I believe if the number is over 100 you type the number verse spelling.
I think it depends on how you want the number pronounced. For example, do you want 2016 to be pronounced "two thousand sixteen" or "twenty sixteen"? It matters if you're reading the story aloud.
The general rule of thumb is number below 10 are numerals and any over are spent out, but its a personal preference, you don't have to follow it.
Do you have a source for this general rule of thumb? This article, http://www.grammarbook.com/numbers/numbers.asp, which references the Associated Press Stylebook and the Chicago Manual of Style, has it the other way around.
