    Guilty Pleasures

Discussion in 'Discussion of Published Works' started by East, Jul 7, 2011.

What are your literary guilty pleasures?

What books do you indulge yourself with, yet feel ashamed to let anyone see you reading?

For me personally, it's Star Trek Voyager books.

The Clique series. It's so shallow, but I like it. At least somewhat. :p

I'm a big fan of StarCraft and Diablo-books. Not proud of it. Not at all.

The Twilight Saga. :) I don't know if I would really consider it a guilty pleasure, though...I can't think of anything that I would be embarrassed to be caught reading.

Same here. I hated that book (yet read both Angel & Demons and Lost Symbol later), but it got me into the genre. There's a lot of great stuff there. :)

Cross between the Artemis Fowl series and the Twilight Saga. I love both in their own ways, but I don't really announce it to the world.

I read the Halo novels, at least until they started writing novels that had nothing to do with Spartans.

Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Blake series, up until Blood Noir.
I've only read the series once, but that was enough for me.. Funny enough, Guilty Pleasures is the title of one of the books in that series.

I'm not embarrassed by anything I read, whether it is widely recognized as literature, or whether it is a gaming-related novel that is a quick, entertaining read.

Back when I was in my early twenties, I used to like to read these men's-adventure series, like The Executioner, Able Team, Phoenix Force, and the like - books about highly-trained warriors blasting the crap out of the bad guys. Absolute trash, but the very definition of "guilty pleasure". I was so proud of my literary taste in those days, but I would never let anyone see me reading one of those books!

My sister got a degree in English literature and classical studies, and spent her four years at university reading all the great books. When she graduated, all she read for a LONG time was Mickey Spillane. I thought that was kind of funny.

I really enjoyed the Pendragon novels all throughout middle school. Still have the entire series on my bookshelf.

I read Rhoad Dahl to my little brother at night to give me an excuse to love those books again, lol. Unfortunately a bit too old now to say I'd read them otherwise so I use a sibling as an excuse!

Roald Dahl hates kids! He's always blowing them up or turning them purple or shrinking them or some other torture they never quite get out of. Argh.

He's a hard writer to love, for me.

Lol I still read my copy of Where the Sidewalk Ends: Poems & Drawings by Shel Silverstein to this day.

In fact, I still recommend it to people and am not embarrassed by it.

Okay, well, I guess not everyone. I mean, being stuck as a mouse forever probably isn't ideal...

Haha, me too. Yay for children's books. I do have the excuse that it can be considered research though. :p

    Also, Roald Dahl is great.
