Chess reference

Simple question do you consider referencing characters in stories as a chess board is cliche?

 

Not if they really do look like a chess board.

 

I don't think it is, as long as you don't overdo it, but I suppose it depends on exactly how you do it. Maybe you care to provide slightly more detail?

I think it would depend on the character and how they view the world. Even if its cliche, I don't think its one that isn't far from reality. Some people view the world like a giant chess game.

I'm confused myself. You mean like having two characters playing chess? Or having someone refer to someone else as a chess master and he/she's moving the peices (being metaphors for people) to further his/her own personal goals?

No. If it is a natural part of the story and not forced, why not use the technique?

 

What I ment to show was that many times books state that people are simply pawns on a chess board controlled by a greater force.
