    Based Stories

Discussion in 'Plot Development' started by Hermanberntzen, Aug 9, 2011.

Is it allowed to use clue's from for example Greek Mythology , use fragments of the story , use the base plot and build out you'r own story from there?

    Of course. Go ahead.

James Joyce wrote his masterpiece Ulysses modeled on Homer's Odyssey. It's done quite a lot.

It's very common. Yes, it's allowed.

    Go for it!

Almost every story nowadays is based on some other story, which was in turn based on yet another story, which they heard from their uncle, who in turn heard it from a dinosaur, who got it from... you get the idea!

When I do something like that, I always like to make an acknowledgement at either the beginning or the end of the tale, letting readers know where I got my inspiration from, too.

I think a lot of readers actually like to spot the references for themselves, so I would only do it at the end. Or in a blog.
