    The Theme Idea Thread.

Discussion in 'Bi-Weekly Short Story Contest Archives' started by Ferret, Jul 12, 2007.

Guys, this is mostly for me, since I delete pm's after reading them, even when I don't want to. Also, this is incase there aren't many ideas given during the voting.

A permant theme idea bank, if you will.
So, please, post all theme ideas here.

I'm guessing this is for the weekly writing contests?

(Forgive me, still trying to get used to how things work around here! :))

    Great idea, ferret!

Here are a few ideas to get the ball rolling:

Visiting a place where no one knows your language.
    An embarassing situation.
    Coming of age.
Ghosts (very broad range of possibilities here).
    Illness.
The highway (also quite a few interpretations possible).

    Ideas .. hmmm.

Write from the perspective of an animal or something inanimate - I once wrote a piece as a snowflake and that went down quite well.

You could use a murder theme, murder mystery and so forth.
You could also go with an image like the poetry and other short story competition that goes over a couple of months.
Why not come up with a sentence that members have to continue one with or even an ending.
Maybe a series of events that has to be put into the piece.

Well I have seen this done on another board anyway, worked ok so I thought I'd suggest it here.

how about a speech, about a set subject. but i can be funny, like a speech about traffic, or toilet roll, or money or something. like a comical thing. we tried it on another site and although i myself did not participate, i read some of the entries and they were hilerious. just an idea anyways.

    Uh... What about:

A situation where one character teaches another character something that changes the teacher.
A scene in which a character has an experience that causes them to recall a past experience.

The running kind or the skin kind?

Also to expand on what Torana said (about the murder mystery), you could give a Clue(do) like thing and we build a story around it:

A butler is killed with a salad fork, why? Was he spooning with the master's daughter? was he dipping into the till? did he have gambling debts?

I actually thought it up in a Word Games thread, but what about being trapped on a zeppelin?
