    Internet Access From Work

Discussion in 'The Lounge' started by Rickie writes, Jun 4, 2008.

I just had my internet access to any site that is a forum or blog blocked.

Has anyone had that happen to them?

Is there any way around it?

I originally joined this forum because the ".org" endings didn't get filtered out.

    This sucks.

    Bummer. :(

The schools are like that, and if you're at work, honestly, I wouldn't do it anyways, because you can sneak past using proxy websites, but you could get fired from your job if you're sneaking past the big-guy onto sites like this if you're suppose to be doing something else.

In most places, office internet filters are being constantly updated. It sounds as if yours just recieved such an update.

I work from home which makes me my own I.T. department.

I checked with my I.T. depatment and was assured that I would never have any issue getting on to the wf.org forum site.

    Those I.T. guys! I just luv'um. :D

    Lol! Lucky for some...

At work we have access to two websites: currys.co.uk and comet.co.uk for price matching purposes.

At school all forums and messaging sites are blocked... along with almost anything that says games on the site.

as one not employed outside the home.
I feel that internet should be watched by employers.
As we see here on this site alone it is adictive.
I also know many workers are just down right lazy and
unmotivated to do the job they were hired for.
The internet makes it easy for them to escape the mundane.
Especially if it is a large company. How do you deal with people
slacking off. In the old world you used to be able to walk along
and see the slackers and take appropriate action.
With the internet it is almost impossible to single out the few.
So the rest of the workers have to be punished.. sort of like the
entire class gets a detention because the wrong doer won't own up.
It still is a crappy way to do things but maybe if someone came up
with a better one size fits all solution they could make a fortune selling
    it to companies.

Luckily I have free and open access to all websites and mail services (though use of youtube is monitored). I am also allowed to listen to my ipod all day too. These perks are rare and I value them highly. It is not out of the question that they will be removed at some point however which is worse than never having had them. Is it better to have loved and lost? Not in this case.

The filtering systems at college were always a hinderance more than a help. They blocked with very little discrimination, and lots of sites I needed access to for history research were unavailable because they dealt with battles and the like. And I know media studies students suffered from being unable to access youtube and similar sites. I feel that the IT dept. could have done more to make the filter adaptive and fit the needs of the individual users, since the system knew precisely which students were taking which courses.
