Announcement Themes/Prompts for Flash Fiction Contest

Discussion in 'Bi-Weekly Flash Fiction Contest' started by thirdwind, Oct 3, 2016.

Post any ideas for themes/prompts for the flash fiction contest here. I'll choose from the ideas members post here.

Also, if any of you are artists/photographers and want me to use your picture as a prompt, let me know. I think it would be a great way to promote artwork from some of our members here.

    Prompts/themes:

    The spoiled brat.
    Death.
    First coffee of the day.
    Infomercials.
    I'm a writer!
    Get over my depression?
    Stripping naked.

You're flash fiction must contain the following words--you can change them to nouns, adjectives, etc.: forlorn, sombre, bright, happy, difficult, hard, normal, house/home, storm...

Thanks for the suggestions, @20oz. I'll use one of them for the upcoming contest.

If anyone else has other suggestions, please post them in this thread.

“...here was the secret of happiness, about which philosophers had disputed for so many ages, at once discovered; happiness might now be bought for a penny, and carried in the waistcoat-pocket; portable ecstasies might be had corked up in a pint-bottle; and peace of mind could be sent down by the mail.”

― Thomas de Quincey, ‘Confessions of an English Opium Eater’

"Did you think I would leave you crying
When there's room on my horse for two
Climb up here Jack and don't be crying
I can go just as fast with two
When we grow up we'll both be soldiers
And our horses will not be toys
And I wonder if we'll remember
When we were two little boys"

― Theodore Morse, ‘Two Little Boys’

“Is this how you repay my goodness--with badness?” cried the boy. “Of course,” said the crocodile out of the corner of his mouth. “That is the way of the world.”

But in all my experience, I have never been in any accident [...] of any sort worth speaking about. I have seen but one vessel in distress in all my years at sea. I never saw a wreck and never have been wrecked nor was I ever in any predicament that threatened to end in disaster of any sort

Consider a turkey that is fed every day. Every single feeding will firm up the bird’s belief that it is the general rule of life to be fed every day by friendly members of the human race ‘looking out for its best interests’, as a politician would say. On the afternoon of the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, something unexpected will happen to the turkey. It will incur a revision of belief.

Ooh, ooh, I just had a thought. For April (April Fools), how about some sort of a literary "Don't" theme, such as head-hopping, telling not showing, omniscient breasts, purple prose, etc...

So, after reading about some of the stories being requested by TOR Fantasy at the moment I thought it would be interesting if the theme is a cultural one.
My suggestions(thought broad they still are):
    Asia
    Islander
    Middle East
    Arctic

Using cultures outside of your norm can involve a lot of research, but is more rare and generally well received due to curiosity.
