Hey, I'm having some issues with the punctuation of a sentence I'm writing and I was wondering if you could help me out. It's in the middle of a dialogue: “Right now? Your mom would kill us if we got late for dinner. I’ll tell you what, see that lamp over there? I’ll race you there and, if you beat me, we can go to the cinema after dinner. What do you say?” “Alright.” We positioned ourselves. “Ready?.. Set?...”—being a kid I felt like I deserved some kind of advantage, and this was the perfect chance. Thanks.
I'm not an expert but I don't think that's a correct use of an em-dash. I think you should lose it and capitalise Being.
I actually had it without the em dash first, but for some reason it didn't feel right, so I decided to add it. But yeah, makes more sense without it.
