Could this be... the right place for me?

Discussion in 'New Member Introductions' started by gigantes, Jun 26, 2008.

with your permission i'd like to hang out here a bit and see how things go. i found this forums by searching "writing forums" on google, so bonus points for the appropriate title. :p specifically i signed up here because this place won the horse race- 3,853 members were listed here compared to only 2444 for "writer's beat" and 2101 for "inkify". that was a clear indication of victory to me, especially since fatigue and impatience prevented me from scanning further down the results.

anyway, i'm looking for a place where i can work on my writing chops, get some decent feedback, discuss various stuff like science, nature, metaphysics, play some games and in general hang out with some un-trendy people who distrust civilisation a bit.

(hmm, that seems like some demanding expectations on second thought)

as for stuff to share, there's a bunch of various crap listed at my home page among my art and game projects. the parrot is strictly a bonus:

Hola Gigantes, RecepciĆ³n a los Foros de la Escritura.

Posting your own work should not be the very first thing you do here. It is really worthwhile to see what other people have done to improve their writing, and see if some of it applies to your writing as well. That is part of why we require members to review other members' work before posting their own for review. On the other hand, there are no restrictions, other than content and copyright rules, on showcasing your work in your member blog.

If you haven't explored the site yet, you should probably do so soon. Newcomers often gravitate to the Lounge, the Word Games, or the Review Room, but there is much more to be discovered if you poke in the corners. Remember to check out our FAQ as well, and be sure to read through the forum rules, too, to avoid any misunderstandings or hurt feelings. Respect for one another is our principal mandate.

As for the Review Room, new joiners often wonder why we do things a bit differently on this site than on other writing sites. We emphasize reviewing as a critical writing skill. Training your eye by reviewing other people's work helps you improve your own writing even before you present it for others to see. Therefore, we ask members to review other people's writing before posting work of their own. The Review Room forums on this site, therefore, are true workshops, not just a bulletin board for displaying your work (and on that note, please only post each item for review in one Review Room forum). See this post, Why Write Reviews Before Posting My Work? for more information.

Enjoy your stay here, and have fun!

Welcome to writingforums! I'm sure you'll find it superior to other sites! ;D (Not a bias opinion or anything! ^^)

If you have any questions there's moderators floating around and TONS of snior members. Of course I'm here too to give any aid I can. :)

Hope you love the site! And again, welcome!

    thanks, peeps! :)

thank you, cogito. and a grand reception it was as we worked on our castalleno for the upcoming trip to peru.

i like the idea of reviewing first- a good and fair approach IMO.

as for reading all your guides and FAQs, my working plan is to subtly (and inefficiently) absorb them through general forum interaction. we'll see how that goes.
