    Time Table

Discussion in 'Plot Development' started by Maxtina, Mar 29, 2010.

Hi every one! (It's been a very very long time! - I was arrested by the dictator government to be honest...) Anyway, I have a time problem with my story!
What is the best way to show the time passing? My story happens in one year and a half and I have no idea how to jump from time to time; I mean how to jump without the reader feeling a hole between the times...
    Help me out please!

Yikes! Are you serious? Or maybe it's better not to answer that.

Anyway, there are so many ways to do this. Look at any of your books and see how some of your favorite authors have done it, then think of the time jumps in your story and figure out which way works best with what's happening.

Here's how I do it. I'd start a new chapter with this opening phrase:
    One year later, ...

    It's just an example. :D

Seasons can be a good way to show it. Doesn't break the flow either.

You serious? That sucks. Hope you're ok ;-;.

Anyway, to answer your question, as others have said you can use seasons or outright have a little bold heading of sorts telling the time skip, date, etc.

You could also have a character within the story note how much time has passed in the story.

You may also, if none of those methods appeal to you, make a little timeline of sorts that could go in the back of the book at the end of the story.
