    Hello everyone

Discussion in 'New Member Introductions' started by alboyd, May 7, 2009.

    Hi Everyone..

Yes. Another new member! I have been reading the New Member Introductions threads and they seem to be cropping up a couple every hour so it seems this must be a fairly popular site!

I have always enjoyed writing but I suspect I am not really very good. I lack every single skill that good writers have such as plot and character development - but I can write a fairly good business proposal (my day job!).

Anyway - I'll be totally honest and tell you why I signed up. I have been spending my spare time in the last month or so developing a new website which is all about writing stories. It's about collaborative story telling - but that's all I will say for now. I will be totally respectful of this site and it's members and I will not post any URLs.

I haven't had the time yet to find the rules of the forums with regards to putting up links etc but I would be most grateful for some feedback in that respect. My site, if it proved in anyway popular could certainly reduce the amount of time you good people would spend on this forum and so I think it would be totally unfair of me to post any links (which would no doubt be torn down straight away anyway).

So I look forward in the meantime to read some of the threads and learn a thing or two. Who knows - perhaps there is a reason I am here and perhaps I will find that I do have the potential to be a writer of some sort.

Hello Al, Welcome to the Writing Forums.

I appreciate your discretion. We do in fact have strict rules against advertising, anbd that includes web site promotion. We allow users to point to their own personal, non-commercial sites, but that does not include forums or submission sites.

Posting your own work should not be among the very first things you do here. It is worth taking the time to see what other people have done to improve their writing, and see if some of it applies to your writing as well. That is part of why we require members to review other members' work before posting their own for review. On the other hand, there are no restrictions, other than content and copyright rules, on showcasing your work in your member blog.

If you haven't explored the site yet, you should probably do so soon. Newcomers often gravitate to the Lounge, the Word Games, or the Review Room, but there is much more to be discovered if you poke in the corners. Remember to check out our FAQ as well, and be sure to read through the forum rules, too, to avoid any misunderstandings or hurt feelings. Respect for one another is our principal mandate.

As for the Review Room, new joiners often wonder why we do things a bit differently on this site than on other writing sites. We emphasize constructive critique as a vital writing skill. Training your eye by reviewing other people's work helps you improve your own writing even before you present it for others to see. Therefore, we ask members to review other people's writing before posting work of their own. The Review Room forums on this site, therefore, are true workshops, not just a bulletin board for displaying your work (and on that note, please only post each item for review in one Review Room forum). See this post, Why Write Reviews Before Posting My Work? for more information.

And while you're looking around, don't forget to check out our Weekly Short Story Contest and Weekly Poetry Contest. They actually run more than one week apiece, but any member may enter, and all members are urged to vote for their favorites.

Enjoy your stay here, and have fun!

For writers you guys are having some trouble with your spelling this evening huh? :) Just kidding.

Thanks Cogito I'll just check out the forums then and keep quiet about my site. It's non profit if that counts - no advertising on the site at all... I'll send you some private messages later to discuss anyway.

Thanks for your welcome message and I'll check out the links in your post.

    Hi and welcome. :)
This is a good site to spend free time on whether you are interested in writing matters, or not. There's always a spare chair in the lounge! ;)
