    Fire on water

Discussion in 'Research' started by Jade, Aug 5, 2008.

Basically, my question is what would happen if you took a flamethrower and used it on the surface of water.

Like, would the water dip under the flame, would the fire go out, would there be smoke/noise ect.

Quite a small question, but if anyone could answer it, then I'd be very grateful.

Flamethrowers use a petroleum based fuel which is lighter than water and won't mix with it, so the flames would burn on top of the water until the fuel was consumed. The water would heat up[ somewhat, but most of the heat would rise from the burning fuel, so there would not be much hissing from steam being generated, and the water would probably not boil unless it were very shallow.

It depends on the fuel as to whether there would be any smoke - petrol for example would create smoke, liquid petrol gas for example would not as it burns clean.
