    Tumblr erotica is really terrible.

Discussion in 'Erotica' started by Valery Faye, Jul 25, 2015.

    Hi all.

So... I've recently created a Tumblr blog to post snippets of my erotic fiction. I thought maybe it would help build my readership a little.

Oh, boy, was I so wrong.

In the first place, I mistakenly flagged myself as NSFW. I mean... my stories sometimes have adult content, but not always. None of the pictures I reblog are pornographic, either. Just cute and sexy - like a couple kissing.

So, now that I'm stuck as NSFW forever, I'm having very little luck... The other erotica blogs are nasty, raunchy, sex just for the sake of sex. And the writing is so horrible. No plot, no character development, no craft. It's cringe worthy.

And so now, I sort of feel like I'm wasting my time because Tumblr erotica readers like the terrible stuff, and the other Tumblr fiction writers don't want anything to do with Tumblr erotica (and understandably so).

    Alas.

I'm not familiar with Tumblr myself, but after looking it up, I think you shouldn't have been surprised. The site's forte is short clips of everything, videos as well as text and audio. The people posting "erotica" there aren't serious authors. They are posting the most extreme stuff they can get away with in order to attract followers. That's it. You jumped into a totally different market.

It's like a film producer putting trailers of a mildly erotic film into Xhamster or Clips4Sale.

You would be better off going to Goodreads and joining the appropriate erotica groups. Make friends, give away books, write short stories for events and so on. It works. I know because I am there (not under this pen name).

Thanks for the suggestion. I will definitely check out Goodreads.

To be honest, I was sort of grasping at straws and had no idea how to go about this sort of thing. The idea of publishing and building readership is still very overwhelming....

Oh... goodness... tumblr.... No. No, no, no.... Take Bryan's advice, and... learn to live with the fact that the word erotica itself is a word fraught with meaning, but little agreement on what that meaning is. Check out the different groups at Goodreads and find the one that has the right feel for where you feel like your work floats. ;)

In addition to the Goodreads suggestion, why not create a new tumblr account in a different category? I'm not that familiar with tumblr so I don't know how useful it could be to you, but if your account is newish you won't be sacrificing too much if you start a new account from scratch.

Coincidentally, I have just started an erotic fiction blog and created a tumblr account to increase my readership. I shall follow up on Goodreads myself - thanks!

So I did end up making an account on Goodreads - good idea!

I also made a Smashwords account - so glad. My short stories and flash fiction are all free and have been downloaded hundreds of times.

However, my one novella, that I only charge, like, $1.50, is hardly getting any sales. Oy -.- I'd have more luck if it were only 99 cents, but damn it, I worked hard on that novella lol
