    What's your favourite word?

Discussion in 'Word games' started by The Peanut Monster, Jun 8, 2013.

Ok: so this isn't a game as such, but you know we all have those words that we love to use, or really like the sound of. So let's hear them, with an explanation of why you like it.

    I'll start:

    Peanut.

Perhaps that's no surprise, but that's why I'm the Peanut Monster. It's not because I like peanuts, in fact, I'm kind of indifferent to them, and frankly, I think the word is wasted on the nut. I love the sound of the letter "p" contrasted with other consonants for some reason, and words like "pink" "punt" "pit" are all cool sounding to me, kind of cute, and "punchy" :p. Peanut, well, its the best of them all.

I can't say it here, this is a family forum. If you're familiar with the show, just think of the word Pinkman always used on Breaking Bad. Yeah, I know it's vulger but for some reason It's a nice period when you're really mad at someone.

I don't have a single favorite, but there are some that I do fancy.

    Lugubrious.
    Kerfuffle.
    Perspicacious.
    Egregious.
    Exigencies.
    Predatory.
    Cunning.

    ^ Nice picks Ed
I have a hard time picking one too,
    Lilaceous
    Tintinnabulation
    Squiggle
    Luminous
    Jambalaya
    Vanish
    Boomerang

I pick mine by sound. Love how vanish is thrust from your mouth as though it is vanishing from your lips, how boomerang doubles
back in your tongue, how Jambalya is a jumping tongue-dance and lilaceous is caressing.

Most of my favorites are simple words. I know I've extolled the virtues of long words on this forum before - or, at least, defended their use when they're the right words - but my favorites are usually short. Here's a selection:

    Balance
    Dawn
    Gentle
    Glass
    Shark
    Smoke
    Talon
    Thunder

One can write powerful poetry with words like these.

I like the sound of certain words, like tintinnabulation, rumble, brouhaha, and rutabaga.

But my favorite word is the the one that fits snugly in the sentence I'm working on at the time, the word that launches the sentence from adequate to memorable.

    Aphotic
    Commozione
    Spark
    Rifle

Not sure if I have a favourite word but I always loved the name of a Portugese footballer - Oceano - pronounced O-Cee-ah-no, no idea why but it's also a hotel chain here in France. My wife's is cellar-door.

It just... says what it's meant to say, in an elegant way that rolls off the tongue.

Like others before me, I have no particular favorite. One of them, however, is incision. To me, that word sounds exactly like what it means.

    Of course others include:
    guacamole
    anejo
    hubris
    ornery (southern US pronunciation only)

My favorite words are my favorites not because of phonetics or intonation, but simply the meaning they represent.

    1) Name - If you think about it, these things that we usually take for granted hold such power. Is a dog still a dog if not called a dog? *shoots self with Shakespeare lines*

2 - 5) Not in any particular order:

    Love
    Death
    Annihilation
    Green

I just like the way the letters complement each other and how they sound when I put on a French accent. I feel sophisticated... or something. Maybe it's the five year old girl in me who loves fairy-tales.

Soccer-ball, cause it was my autistic son's first real word and

Mom, cause I waited four years to hear him call me that.

Like most of the others, I don't have a single favorite, and I don't know why I like these words, but for some reason I have a fondness for them:

    illuminate
    enlighten
    acquire/acquisition
    satisfying
elaborate (the verb, not the adjective)
    and of course...
The four-letter "F" word. (Actually, that may be my favorite. I can't seem to write a story without it. Usually it's used multiple times. That word, and it's -ing form as an adjective is extraordinarily useful.)

Intuitive. Sadly I find myself using it almost exclusively to describe the lack rather than the presence.

Maelstrom - it just conveys a feeling of violence in any situation.

Moist/Damp - because it makes certain people cringe in conversation...

    At the moment

    Pernickety/Persnickety

I just like the rhythm of it, it almost feels like you are tutting to yourself as you say it. and how the sound of it reflects the meaning. It's sooo much more effective than simply saying picky or fussy etc. I am happy to have passed on the joy of this word recently to a flute pupil of mine who loved it and has made up her own song about Mrs Pernickety (her new name for her very particular friend)
