I guess Vermont doesn't have any old ivy league schools with fancy Latin mottos or anything?
I mean... just whatever. I'm out.

It's not as if the Statue of Liberty has been given the sobriquet "Mother of Exiles".
    "From her beacon-hand
    Glows world-wide welcome"

    Well, maybe not in Vermont.

It does point to some seriously Pavlovian training in the common 'Murican. Are these the citizens I'm going to have to grow old with? Excuse me while I go finish my fortified perimeter wall.

Haha. You know its bad when weapons, MREs, and a bunker look like a reasonable alternative to engaging society :)

And this is why I never want kids... One, I don't know what I'd do if my child ended up this stupid. And two, if people are this dumb now, imagine how bad they'll be when my kid is my age. No one should have to suffer through that kind of dumb.... -_-

Your child wouldn't end up that way. There has to be something deficient in the upbringing to get there, I think. Being surrounded by idiots, on the other hand...maybes that's the human condition.

That's the kind of thinking that lets dumb people outbreed and outnumber smart people.

...Really? Latin is freaking them out? Our nation's freaking motto is in Latin! Our money's got Latin on it, Lady Liberty has some Latin on her. Really???

I'm gonna crawl into my hole now. Wake me up when society again becomes sane.

What the hell is wrong with these people?

Yeah! Those damned ancient Romans! Why don't them do on back to thar own darn country where they can speak all the Latin they want in Latin-land. ¬.¬ I mean, what have the Romans ever done for us?

Yeah! And our Founders dared to be inspired by those filthy Romans when they wrote the US Constitution and basically created this country! How DOUBLE DOG DARE they!! >:[ How dare those disgusting little pig-lovin' Romans basically invent all of Western Europe and everything Western Civilization and, on a more personal note, serve as an inspiration for Washington and Co. GRRRR!!! >:[

    ¬___¬ ;;

I'm so glad I switched my search engine and home page to Google. This looks like the sort of crap you'd read on a Yahoo News Feed.

I honestly thought people from Vermont would be smarter/more well-informed than this. It's just staggering, some of those comments. I mean:

I wonder what they'd say if they found out Latin is not Spanish. I mean, what kind of culturally isolated life do you need to life so you never become even aware of what Latin is?

I know! I mean, I'm from the Deep South, yet even I know what Latin is. It's beyond staggering that some people can be this dense. I mean, seriously?

I'd understand if it was Spanish - get that out of here. I'm of Asian background and speak Mandarin to my family, but I don't want to see pinyin over here. The national language is the national language. But Latin is entwined with our history to the point it's pretty funny these guys would freak out over it.

Considering that Latin roots make up 60% of the English dictionary one could make the argument that the Latin in the motto was actually our same language.

But even it it were Spanish, get over it, the southern half of the country and lots of spots in between are bilingual. How many people in Europe proper (i.e. not the UK) only speak one language? Very few I believe.

Put it another way: An English speaker with a large enough vocabulary can't speak latin. But he can definitely read the motto

Really? I'm not sure, if I didn't know any Latin I'm not sure I'd be able to read 'Stella quarta decima fulgeat' with much meaning. Good, quarter, decimal something - that's all I think I'd get from it.

I'm pretty sure the US doesn't HAVE an official language.... So having a Spanish or French motto shouldn't be that big of a deal... America is pretty diverse, and I don't see anything wrong with it. I used to get upset at people who didn't know any English. But I've since gotten over that. :)
