Closed Voting Voting is closed, contest #177, "afterlife"

Discussion in 'Bi-Weekly Short Story Contest Archives' started by GingerCoffee, Jul 20, 2015.

Voting will be open for 6 weeks because there are 17 entries and to give way for people to concentrate on the Summer Picture is Worth 1,000 Words contest.

    Contest #177
Theme: "Afterlife" courtesy of @Spencer Rose

Contest story entries can be found HERE

We have 17 entries in this contest! The winner will be revealed in six weeks and the winner thread will be stickied until the next contest's winner is crowned. No more entries are allowed in this contest.

Entries are listed in the poll in the order posted.

Voting ends in six weeks, Sunday, Aug 30th, 2015 ~7:30 pm Pacific Time.

I encourage authors to vote. While it is controversial, it remains acceptable in the short story contest to vote for yourself. I encourage you to vote honestly. In the name of good sportsmanship only vote for yourself if you have read all the other stories and given them your honest evaluation.

Consider how the author has responded to the theme, as well as the quality of the writing and overall impression of the story in making your decision.

Read for pleasure, learning, and to vote.
Make someone's day, vote for their story!

Goodness, I wasn't paying attention and the poll closed by accident. I don't even know how it happened (well I do know, brain lapse ;)) so I've just gone and reopened it.

Wow, that was really tough. I've been torn between two entries for days but I finally made my mind up.

Okay, I'm confused. Where do I find the stories so I can read them?

My second choice, which I very nearly voted for, has 0 votes so far. I can't believe it! We need more voters!

My second choice has 2 so far... Phew!
I guess that summer writing contest + a lot of entries are responsible for small number of voters.

I didn't read all the stories so I don't feel I have the right to vote but I am very curious who is winning. lol. Only a little more time lol. We need a "void ability to vote to see current results button!"

I don't think zero votes is any reflection on the quality of the stories. I thought Transition was beautifully written and I very, very nearly voted for it but it ended up with zero votes. I wish you could vote for more than one story!

Yeah. Just having that.... what do you call it. Self-attacking moment?

So did you read all the stories?

I read all of the openings (first 3-4 paragraphs) and then either skipped to the next one or read the rest, depending on how much I liked the opening. When the authors are revealed I can PM you my thoughts if you like?

Congratulations @Spencer Rose for Sweet Knight first place. :D

@BookLover has second place for Dead House. :D

@Wordhacker has third place with Yanked. :D

And the rest of you all have excellent stories. I didn't see any I thought unworthy of the contest. :D

I loved Sweet Knight, thought it was a beautiful story. I voted for @lustrousonion's Half Life. I found the writing intriguing.

Yeeey! My favourite, Sweet Knight, won! Congrats, @Spencer Rose ! :) As soon as I read it, I knew it'll have my vote, regardless of the other stories, because not many stories can make me cry, and this one did.
If I could have voted for 2 stories, though, the other one would be @lustrousonion 's Half Life. I thought it was fascinating, beautifully written vision of the afterlife that really made me think. Totally philosophical.
The other stories I enjoyed a lot were Dead House (really strong and beautiful) and No Coin For Sharon - great, amusing read. :D

Yes some truly great stories in the contest- obviously an inspiring theme! Well done @Spencer Rose on picking a good theme and another win!

Afterlife so nearly got my vote- I was very surprised to see it didn't pick many up- it was a great read. I also loved Half life- thanks for the reads @lustrousonion and @Omni Presence I look forward to seeing more.

In the end I voted for Bo Coin for Sharon, I really like the blend of mythology and modern day.

Thank you to whoever voted for my piece- it needed a lot of editing but I was in the middle of moving house! I might have a go at smoothing it out over the next few weeks.

Time to look at Travel Anecdotes now!

Thanks for the mentions! I voted for @BookLover 's Dead House. I thought it was the most solid story with good writing to boot. Second choice was @bumble bee 's The Sistine Chapel. I really enjoyed it.
