Closed Voting Voting is CLOSED for contest #188 "Kingdom Come"

Discussion in 'Bi-Weekly Short Story Contest Archives' started by GingerCoffee, Apr 4, 2016.

    Short Story Contest # 188
Theme: "Kingdom Come" courtesy of @Fernando.C

Contest story entries can be found HERE.

We have 12 entries in this contest! The winner will be revealed in 2 weeks and the winner thread will be stickied until the next contest's winner is crowned. Challenge yourself to read one story a day - we need more voters.

Entries are listed in the poll in the order posted.

Voting ends in 2 weeks, Sunday, April 17th, 2016 ~17:15 (5:15 pm) Pacific Time.

I encourage authors to vote. While it is controversial, it remains acceptable in the short story contest to vote for yourself. I encourage you to vote honestly. In the name of good sportsmanship only vote for yourself if you have read all the other stories and given them your honest evaluation.

Consider how the author has responded to the theme, as well as the quality of the writing and overall impression of the story in making your decision.

Read for pleasure, learning, and to vote.
Make someone's day, vote for their story!

Not enough votes!!! Come on folks, my second choice doesn't have any votes and it deserves some.:agreed:

Some of these stories are really good. And the ones you decide against have things they can teach you as well. Why did you or didn't you choose them?

Read to improve your own writing. Read to show the love. :supercheeky:

A few more hours folks, it is OK to judge a story midway and move on to the next if reading all of them through word for word is keeping you from voting.

Get a feel for the writing skill, does it draw you in? Is it too purple or some other thing you rule it out because of? Narrow it down to two or three that you read all the way through.

    Then vote!

@Hubardo wins silver for, The Time I Visited Grandma In Real Life! :cheerleader:

You had my vote with creativity and a provocative plot.

My second choice was @doggiedude's Alliance because I thought it was clever but it seems to have earned a paucity of votes.

As Tears Go By was ahead early on, then tied for first, but finished in second place with the very last vote, possibly a heartbreak for @BruceA. It had some excellent writing, took you there with a satisfying ending.

End Times by @Wordhacker came in third with a little too close to home rendition of a dystopian I hope does not come true.

    Good job everyone. :agreed:

Good sci-fi. I can only hope I pull off quality sci-fi in my WIP whereas you have a demonstrated talent for it.

I am a bit surprised I won, actually. I thought a number of the other stories were more well written in various ways. The Alliance and As Tears Go By were my favorites, but I was biased toward my own work (I thought "objectively" I had the best plot, but I also think my farts smell great).

Congratulations @Hubardo! loved this contest: such different stories. I felt I had "won" as soon as I finished my story because I think it is the best work I have done so far (so coming second is just icing on the top of a fantastic cake, for me!) so thanks for the theme and running this contest!

I thought the Time I Visited Grandma in Real Life was great because of its futuristic themes and quirky plotline.

I voted for As Tears Go By. I was the first voter. I voted for it because of its touching and sentimental plotline and also because it was one of those stories that seemed to rate other stories that followed. The quality of this competition seemed to grow since As Tears Go By so it got my vote. At one point I thought it was going to win but well done @Hubardo because although the story confused me in some places I got the idea and I thought it's unique so... yes, well done indeed.

I thought As Tears Go By was the best written, and The Time I Visited Grandma in Real Life was a creative portrait of electric sexuality.

But The Reckoning of God is in the back of my mind even now, the image of ancient power descending on unknowing, completely deserving victims. I was compelled to vote for it, lest ruin come to my house as well :p
