Closed Voting Voting is CLOSED for contest #189 "Ashes"

Discussion in 'Bi-Weekly Short Story Contest Archives' started by GingerCoffee, Apr 26, 2016.

    Short Story Contest # 189
    Theme: "Ashes" courtesy of @Blighters

Contest story entries can be found HERE.

We have 13 entries in this contest! The winner will be revealed in 2 weeks and the winner thread will be stickied until the next contest's winner is crowned. Challenge yourself to read one story a day - we need more voters.

Entries are listed in the poll in the order posted.

Voting ends in on Mother's Day, Sunday, May 8th, 2016 ~20:40 (8:40 pm) Pacific Time.

I encourage authors to vote. While it is controversial, it remains acceptable in the short story contest to vote for yourself. I encourage you to vote honestly. In the name of good sportsmanship only vote for yourself if you have read all the other stories and given them your honest evaluation.

Consider how the author has responded to the theme, as well as the quality of the writing and overall impression of the story in making your decision.

Read for pleasure, learning, and to vote.
Make someone's day, vote for their story!

Plenty of time left. Voting ends later tonight than usual because the poll was posted late. You have until 8:40 pm Pacific Time. As usual the competition is stiff, something for everyone. :agreed:

Five hours left, plenty of time: skim the stories to rule some out. Concentrate on the best ones and vote. :cheerleader::cheerleader::cheerleader:

Congratulations @ranjit23das, I was one of the people who voted for Century Sam. This is why I voted for it:

    1. The TV commentators were engaging in the storyline and sounded real.

    2. I thought this was a unique interpretation of the theme and seasonally relevant, too.

    3. The next time a really great sports star makes a series of unforced errors and obvious mistakes, I'll be keeping this story in mind! Good twist at the end.

I enjoyed a lot of the other stories too but Century Sam was the only one who interpreted Ashes this way, so it stood out for me.

Well once again I voted for @zoupskim's Betty Baxter escapades. The description of life in a zero gravity ship with papers floating off desks and people hanging from the ceiling/wall/floor with magnetic boots just cracks me up.

Century Sam was expertly written, as was @matwoolf's Ashes, and @Wayjor Frippery's Cigarette Bet. I liked @BruceA's story, Respect Is Not Given, It’s Urned, don't know why it didn't get any votes.

And if I didn't mention your story, that doesn't mean it wasn't good, it means there are a lot of really good entries in the contest lately. Competition is tough.

There were lots of good stories. Perhaps people were put off by the dreadful pun in my title! Thanks for mentioning me! :)

That must really hurt @BruceA, that last place again, fourteen times in a row, every week I don't know how you find the strength to carry on, so congratulations, at least.

And @Wayjor Frippery, you too a loser - really my pain is dreadful for you, brother.

And me, back of the dumper truck, shit at everything, beaten by the cricketer. Jealousy twists my mind into biscuit crumb [mmm, v.good]

@ranjit23das, you are THE GREATEST, big respect my hero, I enjoyed your story v much, kiss kiss, and groupy smothers author with his bellies.

    ...

Thanks @GingerCoffee for looking after us all...:)

We will march on, quills aloft, all of us, until our pages are covered and the medals hang heavy around our proud craning necks!

Thanks, @Lea`Brooks, for your kind words. :)

I liked yours, @BruceA — also in my top three. Maybe the violence turned some people off (?) Only guessing. Prudes the lot of them ;)

    This!
