Closed Voting Voting is CLOSED for short story contest #172, "Teeth"

Discussion in 'Bi-Weekly Short Story Contest Archives' started by GingerCoffee, Apr 11, 2015.

    Short Story Contest # 172
    Theme: "Teeth" courtesy of @Lancie

Contest story entries can be found HERE.

We have five entries in this contest. The winner will be revealed in ~two more weeks and the winner thread will be stickied until the next contest's winner is crowned. No more entries are allowed in this contest.

Entries are listed in the poll in the order posted.

Voting ends in ~two weeks, Sunday, Apr 26, 2015 ~5:30 pm Pacific Time.

I encourage authors to vote. While it is controversial, it remains acceptable in the short story contest to vote for yourself. I encourage you to vote honestly. In the name of good sportsmanship only vote for yourself if you have read all the other stories and given them your honest evaluation.

Consider how the author has responded to the theme, as well as the quality of the writing and overall impression of the story in making your decision.

Read for pleasure, learning, and to vote.

One more day to vote. Looks like the theme, 'teeth', has brought out the horror writers. :D

Yay @Lancie: First place with a fresh version of a classic horror story.

@BeckyJean comes in second with a sad but clever story of mourning one's loss.

@VirtuallyRealistic and @lustrousonion tied for third.

    Great job folks!

New story submission and voting threads will be up soon.

Competition is heating up in the short story contest. We have a substantial collection of excellent writers. I don't think I've seen a bad story in more than a year. No one should feel bad about losing when everyone is writing such good stories.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who sees the horror in teeth :D another crop of brilliant stories. The Dentist gave me shivers and @BeckyJean you write dark so beautifully.

Congratulations @Lancie for your win in tooth fairy. I thought that your story incorporated the theme really well and imaginatively. I did vote for @BeckyJean (Lenny, Molly and Me) because it took me two to three reads to realise that she's writing from the perspective of a car! I thought that was different.

Well done to all writers! Some great stuff here.

Congrats @Lancie and all the other contestants! When I first read "Tooth Fairy" I was convinced I'll vote for it, the writing was so great and it gave me shivers (really creepy), but than @BeckyJean 's "Lenny, Molly and me" appeared and totally bought me with its warmth, heartbreaking story and a shocking revelation that its main character was a car! :D Even though it wasn't as connected to "teeth" as the "Tooth Fairy", which was all about the teeth. :)

Thank you so much for that, @Ivana and @dbesim! So appreciate your kind words. :) I knew I was taking a chance writing from that perspective, but this sad voice spoke to me and I ran with it. I tend to humanize the cars I drive, i must admit. lol! So i guess the genesis of the story started there. ;)

I also find I often take a side-road on the 'themes' given, not being as literal. Sometimes i just reference the theme loosely. It doesn't always work. ;) But here I opted for the 'teeth' of the claw-like wrecking ball "biting" into the car, and the "metal mouth" of the Chevy's bumper guard that crashed into him earlier. But definitely true; it was NOT as teethy and beautifully creepy as Tooth Fairy. :) I sure appreciate the votes and critique, tho! Always, always do.

What a sweet compliment, @Lancie! I will keep that compliment close - especially on those gray and frustrating nights when I feel clunky and uninspired. :)
