    New to forums/writing

Discussion in 'New Member Introductions' started by fear.sin, Aug 23, 2007.

    Hello,

I am new to these forums and somewhat new to writing. I feel like I am a very creative person and have been looking for lots of ways to express my creativity. I have always loved making up stories and for a long time wanted to design video games so people could live those stories. Hovever I don't feel that it is how I want to share my idea's.

Well I have always enjoyed reading and have been reading more than usual lately and started writing some short stories and found it very satisfying.

I was hoping to learn some literary techniques and find some practices I could do so I can grow as a writer. So I am asking that if anyone has any advice in that area please let me know so I can set goals and grow.

Also are there any good english/writing books anyone recommends I read?

Thanks for reading and I look forward to your comments.

Hello and welcome to our forum. Please visit Noobie Packets! - Writing Forums to get further acquainted with the rules and features of the site.

In the links thread (posted in the Noobie Packet),there are some helpful grammar sites. Until then, get in the review room, because looking over others' work can improve your own. (Also, you'll need at least 2 reviews to post your own story there.)

Hello fear.sin, Welcome to the Writing Forums.

If you haven't explored the site yet, you should probably do so soon. Newcomers often gravitate to the Lounge, the Word Games, or the Review Room, but there is much more to be discovered if you poke in the corners.

As for the Review Room, new joiners often wonder why we do things a bit differently on this site than on other writing sites. We emphasize reviewing as a critical writing skill. Training your eye by reviewing other people's work helps you improve your own writing even before you present it for others to see. Therefore, we ask members to review other people's writing before posting work of their own. The Review Room on this site, therefore, is a true workshop, not just a bulletin board for displaying your work. See this post, Why Write Reviews Before Posting My Work? for more information.

Enjoy your stay here, and have fun!

Hello - I'd follow adamant's advice to start but any quick google on a technique will turn up lots of info and wikipedia is pretty good if a little technical if you are researching something in particular.

Failing that I'm afraid I don't know any teach youself creative writing help texts to advise but as a rule of thumb, for fiction to be good it has to be believable and have something interesting happen during its course which may or may not come to a conclusion.

if you have any specific questions let us know, though a good check round the boards will help you out too.

See you round the site and welcome!

Thank you all for a warm welcome. I have been taking the advice and reading a lot of short stories and poems so far on the forums.

I am finding that there is a lot I don't know and have to learn. At the same time I feel excited as I know I am capable of the same quality work. This is something I feel will come naturally.

As long as I have all of you to help critique my work I think my ideas will grow quite positively in these forums.

I look forward to posting in the future!
