Pick this one. "The Dark Frost" sounds like something you'd find in a GRR Martin novel. (To be honest, that's the only reason I picked it.)

The Dark Frost - an examination of the gothic in George R.R. Martin's 'A Song of Ice and Fire' series.

Ha! That could be a good one too.

Just thinking again ...strikes me that the world view of the Nordic pantheon of gods was different in lots of ways from that of the Greco-Romans. (And maybe I'm doing THEM a disservice by lumping them together?) But the ultimate fate of the world as believed by the Norse, was not good. The world would end when the Frost Giants won the battle. I don't think there was an equivalent in the Mediterranean belief. Did the world end at all, in Greek mythology? Fatalism existed, but it was more personal and less universal, wasn't it? Can you connect the fatalism in Nordic poetry with some of the fatalism existent in our belief today? That the world is finite, and will end? And not well...

Sort of. The Greeks had the Titans in Tartarus, who were still alive, and the Greek pantheon did indeed fear them. But if it was anything as dramatic and set in stone as Ragnarok I honestly don't recall ever reading.

The Greek gods often didn't let on about the future unless it related to people's lives - and fate was not something mankind had complete control over. In the Greek world things happened to people, and they only had the free will enough to their own reactions to events. In The Odyssey Odysseus was always going to get home if the gods had agreed to it, but Neptune did make his journey elongated and difficult because he was a jerk. The Nordic gods seemed to hold the people of the world on a much looser noose. I guess because their fatalism was so present from the Voluspa.

I think I could easily relate Ragnarok to our present fatalism. The translation of 'Ragnarok' is literally 'The Doom of the Gods', it is the end of history. That's an idea that seems to always come up, we always seem to have immanent doom looming over our heads.

The TV is on in the background, showing the baseball game between the Giants and the Pirates. I'm not familiar with either team. It was very confusing, because I kept hearing the commentators talk about underpants.

Turns out one of the players is named Hunter Pence.

I had to laugh at myself.

More like a practice audiologist. ;)

Well, after using a portapotty for the first time in recent memory, I must report this: I now understand why ladies hate those things. The images will be forever burnt into my mind with no hope of recovery.:dead::blech:

Lew, if I had a purse, I would've hung it on a nearby tree or had my spouse hold it for me when I went in. ;)

So is that how you handled that Crimson Tide loss? You hung out in the portapotty?

<breaks out into laughter and falls off chair>

No, I was too busy doing other things. I wasn't even aware Crimson Tide was even playing today.

They're ok if you're super drunk. But I guess that's when pretty much anything goes.

In other news, my nephew has finally got a name: Vilho Vihtori. His surname also starts with V, so he's got a triple V in his name. :D

His parents are a tad eccentric. The kid won't be needing a catchy nom de plume if he decides to become an artist :D

So my journey's brought me back here for a little while to share something I feel is important. So While I'm here I thought I'd at least say hello!

I hope everyone has been doing well. I received a wonderful email not long ago from a forum member hat really made me smile. I've also been in touch with Aled on Facebook and he seems to be doing well. Making great progress on his story. I also happened to see some of the endearing posts about me that were left behind, and I'm touched. [IMG]

I've been doing really well. My life is still the roller coaster it's been for some time. My family will be moving to a new apartment in a few weeks. We somehow managed to find enough money for a nicer place. My mom may begin working a little too, my sis is looking at a new, higher paying, lower stress job (which was almost offered to her on the spot), and I may, through a confusing and unfortunate mix of events, be looking at a promotion soon. I'm not expecting anything, but I'm appreciative of the current energy flow. :)

I've not done anything writing related in a while, but I'm okay with that. I've been doing a lot of reading, primarily into things to help me on my spiritual stage, and I think it's paying off. I can't shake the feeling of change. I also bought a new set of crystals, sending most of my old ones to a friend beginning his experience with crystals. When it comes down to it, I'm learning to get deeper into myself and harmonize with the natural flow of things, and it feels nice.

I've been peeking in here every now and again, but I'm wondering how everyone's been. I saw that Garball left us. Too bad, he'll certainly be missed and I wish him all the best. I'm glad to see things don't seem to have changed much. ;) (haven't really been gone long anyway )
