    Poetry Contest
    One Hundred and Two

Apologies for the delay. The combination of holiday illness, and heading back to Uni has wrought havoc with the contests lately, but now I'll be getting back to our regular scheduling.

    The Rules

    • All entries must be on the set theme.
    • Only one entry per member.
    • No editing of entries once posted without my express permission (i.e. PM me and ask).
    • Poems must be titled
    • Entries must not have previously posted on the forums, and are not permitted to be posted for critique until AFTER the contest is completed.
    • Any violation of these rules will result in disqualification of entries, and possibly infraction.

The entry stage will last seven days, meaning it will close on Monday 18th January 2010.

The voting stage will begin immediately, and will be open for three days, ending on Thursday 21st January 2010.

And this week's theme is (courtesy of becca): Displacement from Reality

Be imaginative, have fun, and get writing

PS: If you have any questions, please feel free to PM me. I don't bite (much).

    The Lizard King

What worlds were sparked, I wonder,
    behind those godly eyes?

What worlds may yet there be,
    squelched and squinched
by shuddering lids beyond the highway
at the end of the night.

Some of us are for the realms of bliss
and others are for the still
and silent night but you, my friend,
    were always for life's delight.

    He was the Lizard King.
    He could do anything.

I found a Jar (Hello Droog)

    (A little vibrato on it.)
    (Okay now, pluck.)
    (Good you're doing good...)

Comes the ring that echoes the being.
    A tightening of the eyes.
    Quick release, I feel well
when they stick that needle into me.

Comes the music that changes me again.
    A softening of the senses,
for a sharpening of the will.
    I feel well
when I can face livid hell.

    Sleep, just sleep.
You are in our hold now -
and low son you sold your eyes a long time ago
to a ragged man who said he'd use them in his magic show.

    So don't be sad.
    This isn't real.
    It's all just pictures.
They never did harm anyone now did they?
    They're not yours,
    "Silly. Sitting with doves?"
You've got pressured soft hands around you
    with white gloves.

(The voices came on hard at 19 -
the angel's choir building, yet to be sweet -
and in the forest you read,
“These jars hold the souls of the dead”
so you took one with you
but lost it in the city street.)

    Nyctophobia

    I graze my hand
    across the four cold walls
    Searching for someone
    Anyone

    Nothing.

    No One.

    Nope.

    Nobody.

    I walk around
    And around
    Faster and faster
    Until the room spins

    I fall to the floor
    Dizzy and disoriented
    Maybe I can imagine
    Someone

    Just wait.
    A little longer.
I’m sure someone will be here soon.

    I begin my search
    and graze my hand
    across the cold walls

    Mind's Prison

    They’re watching me, always watching.
    Right!
    Left!
    Nothing, where did
    They go?

    Empty corridors, white
    walls,
    numbers on
    plaques, spotless
    floors.
    Can’t fool
    me!
    Must escape this
    prison, their needles
    and truth serums,
    whores and
    doctors in smocks and gloves.

    A lazy night guard,
    A Prison watchman,
    chronically obese,
    bulging muscles,
    holstered truncheon,
    machine gun.

    Creep, creep up.
    “Hey, you!
You’re supposed to be in bed.”
    Caught, flashing
    reD Lights, alArms
    scrEAm a cuCkoo’s
    Caw, a chick
    eScapes,
    notflying, but
    Falling
    Over the eDge
    cruel gravity cruel.

    “Hey, c-c-calm down,
    time for bed, it’s o-okay.”
    nO turniNg back,
    aTTackaTTackaTTack,

“I-I don’t want to hurt you”
    AttAckAttAckAttAck,
    Sprawling bodies,
    Got his GUN!
    JaMMed.
    SwingBeatCrushPoundSmachKill!

    Eye sockets collapse,
    Teeth shatter,
    One rib cracks,
    Two,
    Three,
    Fingers snap, flesh
    Peals back, bone
    Splinters,
    Red splatters, paints the hall.

    Noise fills the night,
light and bodies hurry to see.
    More are Coming!
    Guard still alive.
Break his nose! Break his jaw! Break his arms! Break his neck! Break his face!
    BREAK HIS LIFE!

    Doctors’ Nurses’ Surgeons’ Medics’
    hands free man from corpse.
    blood pools at foot,
    Covers his hands,
    Covers his face.
    “Hold him still,”
    a flash on flesh,
    “Sleep now sleep.”
    Arms numb,
    Vision blurs,
    No escape,

    the sick can rest.

    They’re watching us, always watching.
