    One Hundred and Twelve

Apologies for the delay in putting this up. I've had mountains of university work to do these last few weeks, and it all got on top of me a bit. The entry stage of this contest will be a day shorter, so that I can get back to the usual cycle.

    The Rules

    • All entries must be on the set theme.
    • Only one entry per member.
    • No editing of entries once posted without my express permission (i.e. PM me and ask).
    • Poems must be titled
    • Entries must not have previously posted on the forums, and are not permitted to be posted for critique until AFTER the contest is completed.
    • Any violation of these rules will result in disqualification of entries, and possibly infraction.

The entry stage will last six days, meaning it will close on Monday 26th April 2010.

The voting stage will begin immediately, and will be open for three days, ending on Thursday 29th April 2010.

And this week's theme is (courtesy of rescuecatsrule): Pets

Be imaginative, have fun, and get writing

PS: If you have any questions, please feel free to PM me. I don't bite (much).

    How to be a Hamster

    wake up at night,
    slip outside.
    dig a little
    chew the walls
    climb into your house
    and scramble out again.
    potter around the carpet
open the fridge, fill your cheeks
with food enough to last you years.
dump it on the floor, hope
it'll keep. lick both hands and
rub behind your ears; use one leg
to dry it off. find a giant wheel and
    run inside until you're dizzy
    sleep at dawn
    repeat.

He's named after a Gin, not a guitarist

    Com'ere Hendrix!
    You beast you lout.
    Crapping in gardens,
    making old ladies shout.

    I just washed you yesterday
and your coat's all a mess
    although I'm not much cleaner
    I really must confess

    Hiking beside me or
    chasing squirrels
    while I climb
    I teach you new tricks,
    whenever I have time

    But alas I'm a student
    and I'm never at home.
So for now, I can't own you
    and must romp all alone.

    Dear Mel

    You call me your pet
And you take me to the vet
    And play with me much
And give me biscuits that crunch
    And water so sweet
    And lots of red meat;
For all that I thank you
And I will always protect you
    And we’ll always be friends
    Because love never ends
And I love you so much
More then those biscuits that crunch.

    Anything you like
    I like it too
    That is why I chew
    On your favorite shoe.

And when I bark all night
And you can’t get any rest
    When you finally get up
    I love you the best.

    And I like the park
    Where we take our walk
    But I often wonder
Do you think I can talk?
    Because you ask me questions
When I play with my ball
Like: do I think he loves you?
Or do I think he’ll call?

    And I always fall asleep
    When we watch a movie
    Unless you give me something
    That is nice and chewy.

But why do you spray me
    With rosemary and lime
As if having a few flees
    Was some great big crime.

    And that one morning
When you couldn’t find your slipper
I wish I could tell you
I gave it to my friend Chipper.
    And to say I’m sorry
    I brought a dead mouse
As a special treat for you
    Straight to our house.
    I didn’t even mind
That you had it to yourself
Because I love you my friend
    And that will never end.

    Friendly Attack

Hands tremor, with each shy twist
    of cold steel, almost surreal
    the looming anticipation,
    grounds absorb the pounds
    of paws.
    Approaching quickly
    each stride of its limbs
    fueling the fervent whims
    of a joyful companion
    as it smacks its jaws
    in harmonious sequence.
    The pooling of saliva
    aids the trajectory of tongue
    onto
    my
    face.

    "too much"

    too much waiting,
    waiting,
    always waiting,

    wanting,
    jumping,
    running,

    why?
    why is it that,
no matter how close I am
no matter how happy I am to see him
    he gets tired of me

    I feel good being close,
    letting him feel my nose

every time I hear the door,
    I know,
    there is a new chance,
that he will be happy to see me
that we will play like we used to

he used to want me to stand up like him, and walk on two legs,
    he would guide me

    now,
I hear anger in his voice,
specially when I talk to him
