Weekly Poetry Contest (120) Voting - Patriotism

Discussion in 'Bi-Weekly Poetry Contest Archives' started by Banzai, Jul 12, 2010.

    Weekly
    Poetry Contest
    One Hundred and Twenty
    Voting

A few more entries this week. Let's hope that'll mean more voters.

This week's theme was (courtesy of Me): Patriotism

Voting will end on Thursday 15th July 2010.

Voting for yourself is entirely at your own discretion. I'm frankly sick of discussion on the matter, so any in here will be deleted. If you want to vote for yourself, go for it, but I personally wouldn't do that unless I genuinely believed mine was the best.

The winning poem will be stickied for a week in the poetry contest.

Oh, and if I catch anyone cheating, their entry will be removed from the contest and you will be unable to enter a poem into the contest for a month. Sorry to be such an ogre about this, I don't want to be, but rules are rules and are in place for valid reasons. If you can not follow the rules, you face the consequences.

Best of luck to all entrants, and happy voting.

    Can you feel it?
    It is here!
    FIFA World Cup Soccer
Crashing on our doorstep like waves on dry sand

A world class international sporting event in the land of the Zulu
    Who would ever have thought?
They have done our country proud
I am honoured to be a South African

    The spirit is uncontainable
The pride bellowing from every vuvuzela
Black and white united as one
    For the very first time

The soccer has brought so much more than entertainment
    It has awoken our country
    Appreciation for our roots
A love for a bruised history

Masses of yellow filled the streets
As every person became one for our team
    “We support Bafana Bafana”
    Uttered from South African lips

    We could not be prouder
    Of our African squad
Skill and hard work shone through
2 goals to South Africa, 1 goal to France.

A host nation we have become
    Worthy of praise
A feat that is felt in the bones of our civilisation
Proudly South African we will forever be.

    “I pledge of allegiance…”

    Blood trickles down my arm.
    Cracked and beaten,
    Dry and desolate,
    This river rejuvenates.
    It replenishes…

“To the flag of the United States…”

    Numb to the pain,
    To the world,
    I hold everything I am
In the palm of my hand.

    “Of America.”

    The motherland...
    She’s so far,
    But sends her condolences
    On greeting cards.

    “And to the Republic”

    Sand fills my boots.
    Tears flood my eyes,
    Ripping through cells
    And freeing the souls.

    “For which it stands”

    Coated in salt,
    I am lost…
    A child again…
    I regress.

    “One nation under God”

    Bullets fly on wings
    Ready to strike.
    I don’t move…
    The fear is too great.

    “Indivisible”

    I hear her calling…
    The motherland calls!
    “Oh say can you see…”
    She is my blood,
    My power,
    My strength,

    “With liberty and justice”

    Standing against the storm,
I keep my head held high…
    For Mum,
    For Pop,
    For You, Motherland .

    “For all.”

    Propaganda Patriot
    By Leaka

    Soldiers marching down the
    street holding the flag in
    their arms
    Clouds roll by
this is to be a rainy
    and bloody day

    The roar of the crowd
    as they all wave
    their hands for they
    are patriots
    for they are patriotic
    because if you
    were anything else
    against your own
    nation's beliefs
    you would
    be
    a
    heretic

    They celebrate our soldiers
    killing casualties
    they celebrate our flag
    with false beliefs

    As babies we have
    been fed the propaganda
    of patriotism
    Not knowing
    Not counting how many are
    dead so we can
    continue being patriots

    Blood in The River
    By tarnished

    Leaching from the motionless bodies
    it starts to flow down.

We smell it in the air, the stank so strong
it reminds me of what blasphemy truly is.

A nation of christians, smearing the blood
of the innocents, to spell our our name.

The blood keeps flowing, as the river grows red-
a color so crimson, it distorts our reflection.

    I remember a faint memory
of a red, white and blue
but all I see here is the red.

ONE NAME, ONE STATE, ONE PEOPLE
    By Delphinius

We watch you through mechanical eyes,
    For your own safety, naturally.
We give you the news to feed you our lies,
That is, to inform the public.
Men with guns and clubs to keep the law,
    And move illusion into reality.
A tidy package: one name, state and people,
    Living amidst delusion.

    A flag
    A cause
    A reason to care
Is it in me? Or you?
    The willingness to subdue.
    A will
    A way
    Another one's faith
    Who is better? Are they?
Reason may keep them at bay.
    A Man
    A Country
    Amok rings the bell
Who is coming? Is it war?
They'll turn this land into a whore.
    A fist
    A gun
    Again roils the tide
    Who will win? And survive?
Watch as the land burns us alive.
    A death
    A debt
    All paid in blood
    Who is that? My son?
Care not, fight until we've won.
    A song
    A patriot
    Among the walking dead
Who is he? I care why?
He looks for thanks, in the sky.
    A quiet
    A breeze
    A whispering wood
It was in me, maybe you?
    Can you prove your manhood?
