Weekly Poetry Contest (134) Voting - Christmas

Discussion in 'Bi-Weekly Poetry Contest Archives' started by Banzai, Jan 4, 2011.

    Weekly
    Poetry Contest
    One Hundred and Thirty Four

Again, sorry for the delay. All the essays sort of build up around Christmas.

    This week's theme was: Christmas

Voting will end on Friday 7th January 2011.

Voting for yourself is entirely at your own discretion. I'm frankly sick of discussion on the matter, so any in here will be deleted. If you want to vote for yourself, go for it, but I personally wouldn't do that unless I genuinely believed mine was the best.

The winning poem will be stickied for a week in the poetry contest.

Oh, and if I catch anyone cheating, their entry will be removed from the contest and you will be unable to enter a poem into the contest for a month. Sorry to be such an ogre about this, I don't want to be, but rules are rules and are in place for valid reasons. If you can not follow the rules, you face the consequences.

Best of luck to all entrants, and happy voting.

    White Christmas? Snow holds
back the planes. I want a drab
    Christmas, with you home.

    The Wrap Up
    By Pook

The stress, the expense, the tree and the fairy,
So tense, with so much food to digest, its scary,
The TV runs repeats and the weather is cloudy,
There's not enough seats and people get rowdy,
Which meat to choose? Cheesy music aplenty,
Slippers, not shoes, and my wallet is empty,
This time of year, there's nothing better to do,
Cuz with you here, the real present is you...

    All the best,

    Pook

The War Doesn't Stop During Christmas
    By FrailBeauty

It's Christmas time again this year
And all I wish is that you would be near
The fake snow on the windowsill reminds me of you
And all the challenges we have yet to go through

Around this time when life is supposed to be pleasant
Your embrace I would cherish above all other presents
But alas, my dear, you are far far away
Through this lonely cold night apart we shall stay

And I'll go to bed early, and I won't eat a bite
Because without you here, the feeling's not right
But I know some day soon you'll return from the war
I have no doubt in my faith, we'll kiss soon for sure

But while you're away I must hide here alone
In this less-than-comfortable, slightly cold home
And outsiders may say this is sad an depressing
But to me, my dear, this curse is a blessing

For we'll cherish this difficulty for years to come
Through our close bond, we've already won

    There are other evergreens:
    Shading the corners of yards with stone houses;
    Straight mountain sentries
Arms locked over a forest floor
Thick-carpeted with the needles of a thousand years.
    There are always evergreens.

    But this one, this one
Cut and dying, fine green nap
Of weighted limbs half-hidden by colored things:
    Metal and glass.
    This one whispers.

I see him, but not now; I behold him, but not nigh. A star shall come forth out of Jacob and a scepter shall rise out of Israel.

    There are other celebrations:
White cream cakes and wines and
    Dancing through over-heated rooms.
    Fragrant tables through frosted glass;
Oil and water and hand-made lace.
    Always another celebration.

But this one, only this one,
Stately in the presence of electric-lighted fatmen
Silent dignity drowning out a million RPMs
    Rising from a crushing avarice.
    This one is eternity.

...they will rejoice before thee as with joy at the harvest...and there will be no end upon the throne of David.

    There are other gifts:
    Brightly wrapped and ribboned boxes;
    Small fists full of dandelions;
    An unexpected touch;
    Crocuses through the snow.
    There are gifts.

    But this one,
    Then this one.
    Always promised
    Long awaited
    Undeserved
    This
    One
    Light

For to us a Child is born.

    Window Cleaners Lament
    By Biffa001

“White Christmas? No chance”, the weathermen cry
But I stand here outside and look at the sky
My work is held up, my time off is chosen
The snow is three feet and my water is frozen

I wish I could work and bring in some dough
As I sit here inside by the fire all aglow
My bank balance is shrinking my stress grows each day
Why: “No chance for White Christmas!” do they weathermen say?

My customers call me: “will I see you again
this side of the new year, I have family and friends
coming to stay to enjoy time together...”
I reply with a grunt “all depends on the weather.”

So I scour the reports on the web and TV
For the sight of some sun, that would really cheer me
So I could work once again and clean windows all day
Never been so eager to go out and make hay

    Not Home for Christmas
    By BlackStar66

    The rain hits the window
I glance out over the wing as we begin depart.
I've fought for this so very badly
So why is there a pain in my heart?

“Who wants the assignment?” was the last minute question
“Why, me of course!” was my speedy reply.
How long have I labored for some validation?
This is my shot and it won’t pass me bye!

Angelic voices on the first Noel
Announced to the shepherds the joy that was theirs
Angelic voices that I know so well.
They scream daddy, this just isn’t fair.

Who leaves his family on Christmas day
Flying to a place that they cannot go?
But life beckons me onwards and upwards.
They don’t understand, but how could they know?

    How much I have given!
    How long I have waited!
    The times gone unnoticed
    Ignored and frustrated.

    This is my time!

    I rationalize my decision
How blessed I am to be employed!
I give them anything they ever ask for!
Why are they not grateful and overjoyed?

But their tears as I hang up the phone
Serve to thrust the knife in my side
I see their faces in the pane of my window
Their eyes forcing me to confront my pride.

Our home is cozy with warmth from the fireplace
And the gifts overflowing, but I feel like a clown.
All the toys and the games surely seem empty
Dad promised he'd be home but he's let them down.

    Winter
    By Panda

    On these days,
    when the snow falls,
    grasping the tops of houses,
    the silence numbs.

    The soft swishing,
as the water meshes with snow.
    Like a whisper,
    something warmer than the weather.

    The buildings breathe,
    exhaling, inhaling the winter.
    The people inside,
barely appreciate the beauty, the shelter.

    On these days,
    I'm outside,
    with my hands huddled together.
    On these days,
    the air is fresh,
    I always feel better.

    Merry Christmas
    By cinnim0ngirl

Christmas is buzzing in the air,
    Happiness is all around.
Red and green blind the eye.
I hate this time of year.
    Someone once said,
Tis the season to be jolly!
May his stocking be filled with coal,
    And his eggnog be rotten!
    Seasons greetings, A-hole!

    The Christmas Tree
    By vani

There is nothing to live for and then the Christmas Tree arrives,
Rub salt into the wound why don’t u!
Only the event that I don’t wish to happen- that is going to happen anyway.
How can life hurt this much? -and I hate it SO much as I do.
    My anger is quite-numb.
I am wounded in an empty world of false..lalalalaaaa!

“I am leaving now- and then I am going to Tesco to but some cakes and things.”
Go on then leave, but don’t tell me.

    LEAVE ME ALONE!

Everything that I ever thought would not-
    Happened!
It has happened- in some way or another.
No I’m not telling you that I am afraid.

“Oh, Ania, have you seen my glasses? I think I left them here- you alright- [she carries on her searching activities]-yeah I left them somewhere- and then I am going out to meet Sally- OK?”
    Has anyone seen me- lately?

    I am dying………………
But every joy is followed by pain and vice versa.
I have noticed how life is cruel- RULES?!
    Isn’t it?
    Aren’t they?
    Am I choking? Yes-
    I am choking.
    Not like you see though.
    Death please come-
    'Ding-dong'-
    Be Here!

“…A happy New Year, we Wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.”
    Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!
    I need to get out!
    House-Body-Prison-OH! OUT! OUT! OUT! OUT!

Downstairs a Christmas Tree is decorated by someone I know- I suppose.
It comes from Barry Too Good’s new store.
“So how’s business this snowy winter Barry?!”
“Well you know, everyone loves a Christmas tree, decorating it is such a nice thing to do with your loved ones! Trade is going very well this year- I must say!”
Only the light may be able to take me back somewhere-
    -else?-Elves?

    Really?

    No.
    It’s a lie isn’t it…..
    [she sighs] Huhmmmmmmmmmm.

    I am so alone

At the end of Christmas the naked Christmas tree will rot
    Under damp January
    on top of them.
    And February-NO!
    I must stay-
    with-
    with it-then?

    Christmas Eve
    By jazen

    Children are laughing
    Hope in the air
    Reindeer are coming
    It’s Christmas soon
Stars in the sky – like so long ago
    Tree’s brightly lit
    Magic’s around
    All come together
    Sleep till Christmas morn

Reflections On My First Christmas Alone
    By FrankABlissett

The snow came slow this year,
And the path to our drive is tramped to grit and grass.
    The drive is still white,
Save for the brown where your car should be.

I am alone, this Christmas, for the first time -
    But I am not saddened.

How can heavy hearts hang in a house
Where summer days are spent listening to the poplar leaves quake
While winter nights are wrapped in an old afghan.

But you spent last night in a drafty spare bedroom
    Of my family’s ancestral farmhouse,
Waking to coffee with my mother.
    I woke to hungry cats.

And on this Christmas day I am wrapped in memories:
    Of the fawn I flushed behind the chicken coop one spring;
    The fifty-year flood that lifted the footbridge for our stream;
Walking home with you under snowy spruce boughs.

    Though I do miss you,
    My heart flies with you,
My thoughts ever on you traveling the blacktop byways
Between my family and your family this winter day.
