    Sill Cat

    Sill Cat

My cat sits on the windowsill; hidden behind
the venetian blind with an Egyptian eye he
    measures time.

His honeyed hair rises as the reaper stalks
by. “Not today, not today!” His golden eyes
    decry.

The cats seen death off once again, and even
    midian fears his name.

What angels circle his cat brain?

And demons all are put to shame, he cleans
his fur and fears no pain, my cat died once
    and lived again!

He sees the dead and knows their plight; they
come to see him in the night.

Their spectral lights glint once then die, he
comforts all the ones who cry.

Then mice he’ll hunt, he’ll smile and jump and
dispatch them with a mighty chomp!

And rats do spy and plot likewise, the long tailed
cat’s sad demise, with rodent plots and bubonic
    schemes.

They’ll come up against his sharp clawed screens,
this cat won’t die, he has nine lives, and hissing fury
    is the cats reply.

He strides the Earth and parts the turf, blessed to
    man and a rodent curse.

Egyptian eyed he’ll measure time, forever in my
    fevered mind.

    Dear Theodore,

    Though we appreciate the thought,
we just prefer our meat store-bought.

We marvel at your pouncing skill
that brings to us each daily kill.

But even if we did eat mice,
this many mice would not entice.

    Sincerely,
    Your Owners.
