Weekly Poetry Contest (157) Voting - Yesterday's News

Discussion in 'Bi-Weekly Poetry Contest Archives' started by Banzai, Jul 19, 2011.

    Weekly
    Poetry Contest
    One Hundred and Fifty Seven
    Voting

    Voting time!

And this week's theme was (courtesy of Kontrast): Yesterday's News

Voting will end on Friday 22nd July 2011.

Voting for yourself is entirely at your own discretion. I'm frankly sick of discussion on the matter, so any in here will be deleted. If you want to vote for yourself, go for it, but I personally wouldn't do that unless I genuinely believed mine was the best.

The winning poem will be stickied for a week in the poetry contest.

Oh, and if I catch anyone cheating, their entry will be removed from the contest and you will be unable to enter a poem into the contest for a month. Sorry to be such an ogre about this, I don't want to be, but rules are rules and are in place for valid reasons. If you can not follow the rules, you face the consequences.

Best of luck to all entrants, and happy voting.

    Bygone days, bring new ways
    By wmcbride1983

    The folks how they say
    as they remember bygone days
    continue ritualistic ways
    and remark upon the change

    Old times come and gone
    but still there are some
    who seem just like everyone
    but become revolution

    Time never stops
    except for on the clocks
and with generations come new thoughts
in this world that we have brought

    The time the change
    they all stay the same
    and as memories slowly fade
    we'll always remember bygone days.

    Because It Was Cool
    By Liza

    I was a girl
    Unsure of myself
I used to try so hard
    To be like everyone else

    But forget the cliques
    They're yesterday's news
    Nobody cares
    Only the populars do

    They skipped their classes
    Broke all the rules
    Dissed other kids
    All because it was cool

    Flipping burgers
    Now that's where they are
    While I'm living it up
    In my new shiny car

    High school's long gone
    And it's such a relief
    Because the coin is flipped
    The winner is me

    Our Dailey Dose
    By James Belvoir

We read about it in the papers
We see it each day at 6 o'clock
We hear about it on the radio
We steam it from a server
We get it from a friend
    We eavesdrop on some chatter
    We see it for ourselves
No matter how it comes to us
    Today it is our muse
    Tomorrow it's yesterday's news.

    Yesterday's News
    By jo spumoni

I didn't know she was called Yesterday
At the time, she was quite deceitful
And told me her name was "Today"
I don't know my current mistress either
    Yesterday called her Tomorrow
But Tomorrow whispered in my ear
This morning when the light broke
And poor Yesterday died in the darkness
That she was the real "Today"
    Before her death, Yesterday smiled
At high noon she flashed those beautiful teeth
    And said, very quietly,
So that I had to strain my ear to listen
News that wasn't in the papers
Or on Channel 9 at 6 and 10 PM
    Yesterday's news was simple:
    She was leaving me
So I'd better enjoy her while I could
    And take in every beauty
    And every wonder
    While I still had time

    Yesterday's news
    By TheDalesMan

How beautiful the hills and Vale
How warm the sun smiles on the Dale

While laughing rooks from roof tops mock
The droves of weekend guest that flock
To escape their city life before
Returning to their desks once more

No diesel fumes upon the air
How picturesque, so free and fair
    The villagers without a care
Their smiles, that true intent impair

Behind closed doors the fires are fed
The plagues of rumour breed and spread
Such friendly folk so wise and learned
That is, until your back is turned

Then wagging tongues will thrash and flail
Pricked ears upon the breeze avail
    Themselves of torrid rumours blown
And pass in hushed and whispered tone
To slight and smear the pure of heart
    And tear communities apart
With bitter lies and half truths rife
    The politics of country life

The innocent lie bruised and bleeding
Their pain and suffering ne’er receding.
Though flawed opinion and biased views
They long to be yesterday’s news

    Ramblers return from country track
They call their wives to say they’re back
    Oblivious, though seen firsthand
What ails this green and poisoned land

    What We Were
    By wildthing

To say that we are doing right by the world
Is to say that it is right to be cruel
We go through life striving for ourselves
Yet we pay no attention to those around us in need
Whether war or greed or pain
We continue to do what is best only for ourselves
If we do not look at the past to see our faults
We will never know what we will truly be
For history is not just knowledge
    It’s what makes yesterday’s news
    Important for us today.

    To: Your Tomorrow
    By seelifein69

What is in our acceptation of time?
    a tick? a number?
For my today is lived through me, son
and is not in the history books just yet.

    But when you grow older?
    a year? a century?
When your life is lived through you, son
and I am no longer here in your todays.

Will you remember what I say?
    a story? a warning?
Will our todays fill your head with memories, son
and remind you of my days long past?

Will things I tell you matter in your today?
    of hurt? of love?
Will the news of my today fade away, son
    something forgotten of your yesterday?

    The Most Incredible Thing
    By J.P.Clyde

    A long time ago
    there was a city
    protected by wings seraphs
    that resided in the sea

    This city gleamed and
    glistened within morning glory
    sunlight

    And three boys
    this day decided to
    set out on a
    journey to find the
    most incredible thing in
    the world

    Today was a fine
    boy
    mostly all brawn with
    big shoulders

    Tomorrow was a wiry
    lad
    all brain with four
    eyes

    Yesterday was squirrel like
    but had the qualities
    of both tomorrow and
    today

    They walked along cobblestone
    streets and brick homes
    with honeycomb windows
but couldn't find the most incredible
    thing in the world

    Then one day there
    it sat in the shelves
    of an antique shop

    This must have been
    the most incredible thing
    in the world
    For it was time itself

    A clock dazzling with
    roman numerals
    Decorated with pictures
    of the sun and moon
    And as the time passed
    the moon and the suns
    each reflected what it looked
    like at that time

    It was Today who realized
    something was not right
and then one day Today passed

    Vanished as if he were
    a ghostly spectral

    And all that was left
    was Tomorrow with yesterday's
    memories

    His Yesterday’s News
    By hope123

He holds my hand and tells me something
I start to cry, harder than the thundering rain outside
No eating, no sleeping, just more rain
I lose track of everything, including the time

You are my mother, my one and only
You hurt when I hurt, that’s our bond
Tonight you tell me his yesterday’s news
He loved you and broke you, yesterday
Today, I still love you and I will fix like I always do

I know she is right, he is yesterday’s news
A month actually, is how long I have cried for him
My broken heart bleeds because of him
    One piece yesterday, shuttered today

Yesterday’s news, reports, press is the past, my child
    Life is too short
    Just like that sentence
A bright future awaits you, just look outside.

    The news...and then what?
    By Kontrast

"It's not good news...her condition has gotten worse and she will need surgery"

    mouth tightens...
    a thin line
    like the wallet
    I'm sitting on

    eyes glisten
    but we'll act strong
    as we sway
    to the island song

    When it comes
    it'll crash
    When it's done
    it'll lapse
    No matter what
    you can't be saved
    So just hold on...
    and ride the wave

    No words now,
    only movements
    as I'm swimming through this...
    pile of bills

    make it hard to breathe
    reddened eyes
    are blinding me
    and still, I'll sing

    The wind is harsh
    it has no empathy
    try to breathe
    as you feel it's sting
    No matter what
    there's no escape
    So Just hold on
    as it hits your face

    Today has no answers
    and yesterday had no hope
    I've searched for tomorrow
    but its evaded my touch

Never again shall it truly be taken as gospel
Even when first-hand knowledge seems irrefutable
Whilst in all honestly you can find more moral fibre visiting a brothel
Sources that when placed under scrutiny found to be most unsuitable

Our voice once synonymous with truth, the voice of the public is now and forever tarnished
For now their rights have been revoked, ours once again endeavouring to be heard burnished

Docile leaders who care more for their genitalia than their electorate
Apostles visionary they may be still constrained by surreptitious peers
Your own views shaped by the sullied minds of our self-appointed protectorate
Shown unspeakable horrors and tragedies alongside natural beauties hiding their tears

Grand fonts depicting the events of the past whilst making assumptions of the future
One weeks worth of Sunday papers destroying half a million trees just to spread their truth
Never have we seen such procrastination we need to eradicate the cancer and stitch with a suture
Everlasting truth is what is printed albeit from a source that is increasingly treacherous and uncouth

Bye for now and apologies for the lack of comic strips
Yesterdays news is equal to Todays Fish and Chips
