Weekly Poetry Contest (159) Voting - Man's Best Friend

Discussion in 'Bi-Weekly Poetry Contest Archives' started by Banzai, Aug 8, 2011.

    Weekly
    Poetry Contest
    One Hundred and Fifty Nine
    Voting

Because we all love democracy... Voting time!

And this week's theme was (courtesy of Kontrast): Man's Best Friend

Voting will end on Thursday 11th August 2011.

Voting for yourself is entirely at your own discretion. I'm frankly sick of discussion on the matter, so any in here will be deleted. If you want to vote for yourself, go for it, but I personally wouldn't do that unless I genuinely believed mine was the best.

The winning poem will be stickied for a week in the poetry contest.

Oh, and if I catch anyone cheating, their entry will be removed from the contest and you will be unable to enter a poem into the contest for a month. Sorry to be such an ogre about this, I don't want to be, but rules are rules and are in place for valid reasons. If you can not follow the rules, you face the consequences.

Best of luck to all entrants, and happy voting.

    A Friend
    By J.P.Clyde

    A true friend is one
    that stays beside you
    no matter what

    You did that for me
    A true friend is one
    that stays with you
    when you need someone
    you did that

    A true friend always
    stays a friend no matter
    the struggles they are
    going through
    you did that too

    You have been there
    since I was a kid
    I remember when you were
    small and tiny

    You hissed at me
    but I knew it was
    that you were scared
    Then you meowed at me
    and we became a pack

    We grew up together
    But you were growing up
    faster in cat years

    And I watched you turn
from the bold and husky cat
    to a sick and dying
    withering old man

    You were so young
    so youthful
And then one day it seemed
    you began to die
    Even though you were here
    you could no longer be
    the friend you always were

    You tried so hard
You tried so hard to get
back up and do the things
    you use to

    But you couldn't
In the dry heat of the
    summer when fireworks blazed
    in the sky
    You left me
    No you left your family

    But you never stopped being
    a true friend
For that I am grateful to
    have lived with you
    I love you

    And I hope you're resting
    peacefully now

    Myself 2.0

    Draft it
    Draft it
    Reprogram it
    Granite pipes
    Up in my dream
    Spreading like a meme
    What could the wolf mean?
    Jump the hoop
    Watch it burn
    Wonder if they ever learn
    Travel to the Warp Zone
    Discover the Unknown
    Mushroom Kingdom is gone
    So are my friends
    But I'll always have myself
    Until the end

    Strangle You
    By Derelict Birds

    I'm so shocked by you
So sick by how human you can be
Free will is just not enough for your filthy heart
But you could use some cleaning

    My genitals on your stomach
    Praise your courage but still
You're in for a nice clean kill
Because you can't fight fire with fire

There's not much class you need
To beat a prostitute to their knees
Who the hell wasn't pro-choice when they saw your face
And thought you should hear a voice

    Bring out the board
    You just left me abhor
    Now let's play Trivial Pursuit
    Cause that's what you are
    Have you forgotten I'm art

    Once in a life time
    One day you don't plead
I see your side of the story
When my fingers dig your neck
Your back to me thine before you go blind
    We're all each other has

    Don't, Don't!
    Don't cry
    Don't Don't!
    Don't scream
    Calm down
    This meant nothing

    I just watch
feet shrouded in leather skyscrapers clatter past
diamond enveloped fingers with manicured talons
    curled around breath-taking reticules

    I watch in awe
    of their amazing Armani associations
    and Burberry best buddies
    cold Chanel compatriots
and new flawless fabulous Fendi friendships

    I inch a little closer
    we share a knowing smile
and turn back to our game

    I sit with you
    letting the time slip away
    sipping our mocha lattes
    the bustle swallowing our conversation
it was just another Saturday in Times Square

    Diogenes and the Featherless Chicken
    By Solar

His flat feet slapped the marble.
    His crows-feet sharpened
    on a whetstone of merriment.
He had an urge to bark and growl
    in the corridors
    of enlightened learning,
    but it was too soon
    to hold forth
    as Plato had yet
    to behold the naked truth:
He dashed in on the lecture,
    grinned sardonically,
    plonked a bizarre
    but familiar animal
    at Plato’s feet, saying
    ‘Here’s your man!’

    As if on cue
    the raw, leathery fowl
    clucked before it pecked
    the plump toes
    of a gobsmacked dreamer
    all red in the cheeks:
    Indignant
    but at the same time
    positively moved.

    Puppy Love
    By jennygirl267

Floppy ears and full of love.
You listen as I speak to you.
A nice, rare steak, some doggie treats.
This is what I bring to you.
A little pup, I hold so tight.
A friend is what you've been to me.
With puppy breath and eyes so bright.
With trust is how you look at me.
Gifts you leave upon my floor,
My foot, it seems to find at night.
You see, i'd rather go without.
You're still learning. Well, that's alright.
You lick me on my cheek, so soft.
For I'm the person whom you depend.
    Now I'm starting to understand,
Why you'll always be mans best friend.

    Stop Barking
    By jo spumoni

    12:00 AM
    On my back
    Restless
    Listening
    Yap! Yap! Yap!
    What were our ancestors thinking
    When they took you
    from your cozy wolf pack?

    1:00 AM
    Every silence
    Tinged with fear
    Of your next bark
    I'm a pacifist
    I don't squash spiders
    I don't eat meat
    But if I saw you
    My soft little hands
Would wrap around your tiny throat

    2:00 AM
    Yap! Yap! Yap!
Your crying pulses with my heart
    Is it even real?
    A dream perhaps
    A nightmare
    Needles piercing my eardrums

    3:00 AM
    My eyes are closed
    I pretend the yapping
    Is pleasant
    It's rain, I think
    Against the pavement
    Against the window
    Against my ears
    It's not that blasted mutt
    Who nips my ankles

    7:00 AM
    I rise
    Pale
    Murderous
    Carrying my books
    And awaiting the bus
    You nip my ankles
    And I can't resist
    Bending down
And giving your ear a little scratch
