Weekly Poetry Contest (161) Voting - Wisdom of Age

Discussion in 'Bi-Weekly Poetry Contest Archives' started by Banzai, Aug 22, 2011.

    Weekly
    Poetry Contest
    One Hundred and Sixty One
    Voting

Nice to see a healthy number of entries this week! Now let's see a healthy number of votes.

And this week's theme was (courtesy of Sundae): Wisdom of Age

Voting will end on Thursday 25th August 2011.

Voting for yourself is entirely at your own discretion. I'm frankly sick of discussion on the matter, so any in here will be deleted. If you want to vote for yourself, go for it, but I personally wouldn't do that unless I genuinely believed mine was the best.

The winning poem will be stickied for a week in the poetry contest.

Oh, and if I catch anyone cheating, their entry will be removed from the contest and you will be unable to enter a poem into the contest for a month. Sorry to be such an ogre about this, I don't want to be, but rules are rules and are in place for valid reasons. If you can not follow the rules, you face the consequences.

Best of luck to all entrants, and happy voting.

Her glasses made it into her persona
    minutes before her death.
You see, she never wore them
    when she was young.

    She always had beautiful eyes,
    big pools of brown
    that sparkled
    when she smiled.

And as she aged, her eyes became sad.
    The people around her dying,
    She lived on
    wanting desperately to join them.

When her husband of 50 years
Closed his eyes never to re-open,
You would think the sparkle in hers
Would be gone, but it wasn't.

    When her first born son
hung himself in the basement of his home,
    the sparkle should have disappeared,
    but it didn't.

    When her old cat died,
the one she gave milk to every day,
    her eyes clouded with tears,
but she was still able to smile.

Then one day they took her away
from everything she once had loved,
    and that's when it happened.
    She lost sight of beauty.

    No longer able to see,
blind to the existence around her,
the nurse made her wear glasses,
    And the sparkle, it vanished.

    Cold Feet
    By AfterBroadway

    My foot is cold,
    So I cannot walk.
    As limp and weak
    As a weathered windsock.

    My heart is shot,
    So I cannot run.
    As beat and torn
    As a man in prison.

You wonder why I've not killed myself.
You see, it's instinct to survive.
    Despite my hopeless condition,
I'm too afraid to take that dive.

    Every beat
    The era we meet
    Every shake
    A memory we make
    Every stroke
    A break from the smoke
    Every day
    We wanted it this way
    Every line
    The wrinkles in time

    the adorner
    by chatterbox

minutes, hours and days go by
as my friends and family get old and die
I do whimper and I do cry
but everyone has to say goodbye

I am stood here, solid as a rock,
while children just stand there and mock
my frilly skirts and fancy frocks
but the secrets of life they have yet to unlock

I'm just the little old lady in the corner,
the village's definition of a mourner.
but I'm much more than a beggar on a street corner
because on the inside I'm an adorner

    I walk alone
    By payelK

    I walk alone.
    As my bones get weaker
    and face withers away,
I keep walking the rocky streets
    which were smooth ones.

    I walk on the roads,
that I have walked for years.
But still my memory let me fail.
So I hold a young hand and walk in time,
    the time that's not mine.

    Seasons change year after year,
only the winter gets chillier every time
and summer gets more and more painful.
    Autumns are still fine,
though I look through my hazy eyes.
It looks blurry green every time.

    And I wait...
    Wait for the divine end,
to meet the ones I loved once,
    to reunite.
    But until then,
I only keep walking on my own,
with a heavy heart and the light bones.

    A word to the wise:-
    'Age does not decipher'
    'nor wisdom will choose,
'you may think you're so bloody clever'
'but we have the same shit to lose'.

    Grey Hair and Wrinkles
    By Lost_in_Thought

Have you ever entered an old folks home
And not notice that strange smell
Have you ever seen a lost old man
And thought horrible things about him?
    I have and regretted it

Have you seen a old woman in a garden of gnomes
    And thought she was crazy?
Have ever seen a TV show that regards
    Old people as fools?
    I have and regretted it

Grey hair should be a crown of glory
Yet we dye it and make it our crown of poison
All we every do is try so hard to be young
    Even I have done this.
    And I regret it

    Wrinkles are signs of wisdom
    But we consider them ugly
Using creams and surgery to look young
    Even I have done this
    And I regret it

    So many think of age
    and quake in fear
Everyone thinks being young is golden
    But not I any more
For I have regretted these thoughts

    I'll never fear age
    I'll hold steady and learn
    For now I know
    Grey hair is glorious
and wrinkles wiser then the wise
