Weekly Poetry Contest (213) Voting - One Nation

Discussion in 'Bi-Weekly Poetry Contest Archives' started by Banzai, Nov 12, 2012.

    Weekly
    Poetry Contest
    Two Hundred and Thirteen
    Voting

    Delayed, but stronger for it!

And this week's theme was: (courtesy of Solar) One Nation

Voting will end on Thursday 15th November 2012.

Voting for yourself is entirely at your own discretion. I'm frankly sick of discussion on the matter, so any in here will be deleted. If you want to vote for yourself, go for it, but I personally wouldn't do that unless I genuinely believed mine was the best.

The winning poem will be stickied for a week in the poetry contest.

Oh, and if I catch anyone cheating, their entry will be removed from the contest and you will be unable to enter a poem into the contest for a month. Sorry to be such an ogre about this, I don't want to be, but rules are rules and are in place for valid reasons. If you can not follow the rules, you face the consequences.

Best of luck to all entrants, and happy voting.

    A Nation of One
    By Nick Kilcoyne

There was a nation of two
Each whore different shades of blue
    Each had ideas but disagreed
So they cause each other to fight and bleed
At first things were tit for tat
Until one man whore a very tall hat
He united the people and when he was done
The nation of two became a nation of one

Storm: Song of a Nation Small
    By Darkkin

It began a simple, ignored flash...
    Lightning in the distance.
    The world kept turning.
    Ideas churning.
    A garden green, minds bright.
    Another, closer, flash of light.
    Thunder growled...It was shaken off.

    Cloaks donned, hoods raised.
    Work continued...
    Wind rose, howling...
    Brutal.
    A drop of rain.
    First hint of blood.

    Heads lifted.
    A voice called.
    'Be done.'
    'Indoors, swiftly, one and all.'
A solid phalanx they did form.
Holding strong against the gathering storm.

    Heaven broke, the torrent came.
Hail and arrows speared the ground.
    Lightning struck...
    Too close.
    Too hot.
    The stalwart silence...
A twisted form in the rain said..
    'Oh no...you do not.'

It cast about a knowing glance.
    Rain pounding down.
    Evil eyes glowing.
    Upon something it did light.
An elven child...who heard not the call.
Through the storm she did wade.
Calling her a fool for getting so far away.

    Dreams and fancies.
Exotic flowers and far off lands.
To these places her mind was tripping.
    Drifting floating...
    Until the trees began dripping.
    Muddied hems and soaking cloak.
Across the meadows, her way she made.

    Lightning streaked.
    Searing the sky.
Revealing a twisted figure to her eyes.
    Burning venom bore into her...
    A silent scream...Never voiced.
Blood and thunder scented the night.
As the venom, rage and fire
    Where set alight...

    An inferno, a fury...
    A nightmarish fright...
    Rain and hail.
    Lashing, slashing
    Cutting down...
    Mud seeping...Demon creeping.
    A pound of flesh...
    A pint of blood.
To this glade, brought this demon seeking.

    Venom burned, hale bruised...
    A fractured arm...As the child.
    Elven, dark and fair.
    Reached for the weapon,
    Concealed 'neath rain matted hair.

    A pipe of gold.
    Slim and light.
    Warm and supple
    A comfort in her fright.
To her lips the instrument she lifted.
With her music she was gifted.

    She released a song...
    Sweet, dark, speaking.
    Across the glade.
    'Cross the green.
    In to the night.
In the face of the storm,
    The wind, the hale.
    Against the burning, venomous Gale.

    Darts struck, barbs fell.
    Cuts and bruises.
    Stinging hell.
    Her cloak, a tattered raiment.
    There was no time left.
The song would work, but as of yet
She stood alone, on that hill...

    She dropped the cloak.
    It weighed her down.
The demon's face began to frown.
    Something odd was going on.
    Elven child, dark and fair.
    With her twisted, matted hair.
    Turned about began to run.
    Racing, pelting for the sun.

    Her song, she flung,
Into the face of the storm once more.
A call that would ring from shore to shore.
    Doors open...Heads were lifted.
    Swords were drawn...
    The hue and cry raised.
Some rushed to extinguish the blaze.
    Others gave chase.
In the teeth of the storm, to save a child's fleeing form.

    After the beast they went.
    Rapier, truth, lethal intent.
Down the hill to the glade.
Up to an olden oak she flew.
Concealed inside a shield, a blade.
    Starbright.
    Elven child, dark and fair.
Wheeled about to do her share.

A broken wrist hefted the shield.
A strong, sure hand gripped a hilt.
No longer alone, but an army strong.
    They turned the tide.
    The fires gone.
    Down. Down. Down.
    That demon fell.
    Back to the pits.
    The depths of ....

    The maelstrom softened.
    The howling wind, appeased.
The elven child crumpled to her knees.
    Winded, bleeding, bruised and raw...
She still breathed the rain washed air.
    A golden pipe once more
    Concealed within her hair.

The storm continued through the night.
Washing away the carnage, the fright.
    Elven child, dark and fair.
    Safe and warm.
    Gleaming hair...

    Bi-partisan,
doesn't matter which side my heart is in.

    Result is the same,
    it's driving me insane.

    Red or blue,
    labels stick like glue.

    Stress induced heart attack,
    I want my democracy back.

    Ants Unite!
    By Selbbin

It's all for one, the queens agreed,
Time for us to take the Lead,
To stop them killing with poison and feet,
If we stand together we won't know defeat!

10 million of us for each one of them,
Into the ground we do condemn,
The humans who ruled us for way too long,
So sharpen your pincers and take them on!

Some cynics say: ‘To talk of One Nation
Is to waste a breath on an empty notion.’

But others sing to them a different song:
‘What on mother earth could ever be wrong

With a humankind united by common cause
To stop all this damned abuse and end the bloody wars?’

Take a shot gun to the stack
Of political flyers on my desk

How did you think I would react?
To simply put up with this mess?

    Or something like that..
    By John Jackson

I pledge allegiance to some cotton
Of a Nation behind imaginary lines
    And to the politicians
    For which they stand
One nation; under a forced religion
    Dividable,
    With liberty and justice
    For the rich.

    Peaceful Wishes
    By Snyder80

    Cast differences aside,
    Only the young can abide.
This rule of true human kind,
Ignored by most, embraced by few.

    The race is through,
Though the hate has only begun for me and you.
    Middle ground does exist,
Only anger and hatred dare to persist.

Coming together is the bravest way,
Instead of letting zoo animals hold sway.
    Elephants and donkey's all around,
Who we once were may never be found.

    Children are the coming night,
    Should we teach them darkness,
Or cast our egos and pride aside,
And allow them to love in the light?

Our people make our country great.
Love, tolerance, mercy and an open mind,
Once again, this virtues we must find.

    Flight of the Cardinal
    By fighter25

    High, above the blood-
    splattered cotton fields of Georgia,
    flew a cardinal.

    That summer snow,
    speckled with the sweat
    of our men:

    Sweat that smelled of rusted
    fear, burning substance,
    fuel to the brothers.

    And, they knew not
    that they were, indeed,
    alone.

    As leaders, high on sage
    words of the trusted,
    gave orders to men.

    Men, whose songs fell
    into dusk, yearning for
    their nests, now vacant;

    A string of yarn, dangling.
    Popsicle-sticks, a note, from
    one lover to another.

    Yet, high, above
    a united nation,
    the cardinal flew on.
