Weekly Poetry Contest (225) Voting - Pirates

Discussion in 'Bi-Weekly Poetry Contest Archives' started by Banzai, Feb 11, 2013.

    Weekly
    Poetry Contest
    Two Hundred and Twenty Five
    Voting

    Vote, and vote often!

And this week's theme was: (courtesy of Darkkin) Pirates

Voting will end on Thursday 14th February 2013.

Voting for yourself is entirely at your own discretion. I'm frankly sick of discussion on the matter, so any in here will be deleted. If you want to vote for yourself, go for it, but I personally wouldn't do that unless I genuinely believed mine was the best.

The winning poem will be stickied for a week in the poetry contest.

Oh, and if I catch anyone cheating, their entry will be removed from the contest and you will be unable to enter a poem into the contest for a month. Sorry to be such an ogre about this, I don't want to be, but rules are rules and are in place for valid reasons. If you can not follow the rules, you face the consequences.

Best of luck to all entrants, and happy voting.

    Much romance,
    a pirate's life;
    A dread dance,
    such glorious strife!

    Old ships,
    Loony bards,
    Crippled limbs,
    with a side of scurvy!

    Rum, beer, gin, and mead;
    Cannon, rum, shot, and gunpowder;
    Gold, food, rum, and women;
    did I forget the rum?

Limits of the law and the state,
    of Heaven and Hell;
    Limits are yours to choose,
    if you have the guts!

Whether it be raiding or exploring,
    fighting or loving;
    a Pirate
    is Free to Choose!

    Little boy playing
    Playing as a pirate
Dived straight to the bottom of the toilet
    Legs and arms
    Disappeared all at once
Keep pirate boys away from the toilet

Gambit Jack crosses the Red Sea
    By DeathandGrim

    Oh fear is in fear
    Doubt is in doubt
    For there is a lad
Who is on his way out!

    He will run and run
    through the valley of death
    take dip in the river
    and swim with the trout!

    With fog in the air
    And silence around
    But treasure's a callin
    Adventure abounds!

    A crew with no fear
    Neither water nor land
    Cross the red waters
    No looking back now!

Oh sang the song of a hell of a man
on the land of the dead this man did stand

    For us it is legend
    to them it is life
A life not for you or me but he
    Believe me young lad
    for I have seen
Gambit Jack cross the Red see

    Make Fast the Rigging
    By Darkkin

    Step lively, lads...
    Make fast the rigging...
    The Nor'easter born...

    Look to the skies...
    Make fast the rigging...
For the sun shone bloody this very morn...

All hands now, the jigging done.
    Make fast the rigging...
    Cursing the damned, bloodied sun.

All hands now, to your posts, climb fast.
    Make fast the rigging...
Lest you see this predator done.

Three masted schooner, a pirate's pride.
    Make fast the rigging...
    Waves a'raisin', an albatross flight.

A mighty whirlpool boiling up, hard to starboard, now...
    Make fast the rigging...
A chasm, consuming every last light.

Hold fast, boys, here comes the storm.
    Hold fast to the rigging...
The whirlpool, sucking, drawing it down...

And in that last desperate hour...
A hand, fast to the rigging...
Came the end of the shower...

    Last Sighting
    By Salamander

    In the deepest windless doldrums,
in the sleepy port of call,
we drew many straws to see,
who would sail before the squall.

Would they carve the King of England
    in his sacred, helpless side?
Would they call out vile curses
in the time before they died?

Would they stick the voyage through
    to the aching, bitter end?
If they were caught with no way out
would they screech, and would they rend?

    Would they stand and fight?
Or would they run and hide?
    Each man thought he grasped
    the answer deep inside.

    At last the message came,
    the order to depart,
that filled each man with joy,
and sent a thrill into each heart.

They cast off their soggy ropes,
    pulled the gangplank clear,
that was the last we saw of them,
    after that they disappeared.

    Avast, Ye Captains of Industry
    By Lauren

    Unlawful reproduction of digital media
    can get a fellow sued,
    and when poor Somali teenagers
hijack our ships, the pundits come unglued.

Handy stand-ins for elected officials and crooked brokers,
    for megacorp CEOs
and all the other plunderers with attaché cases
    and expensive clothes.

We should be grateful they do it without force
in a free market machine of many facets,
    console ourselves with convenient purchases
as they part us from our assets.

So read your children Peter Pan,
    romance them on tall tales
that they might grow up believing, despite the evidence,
that the good guy always prevails.
