Weekly Poetry Contest (234) Voting - Nocturnes by the Sea

Discussion in 'Bi-Weekly Poetry Contest Archives' started by Banzai, Apr 22, 2013.

    Weekly
    Poetry Contest
    Two Hundred and Thirty Four
    Voting

A longer than usual break, but as always we're back!

And this week's theme was: (courtesy of Nee) Noctures by the Sea

Voting will end on Thursday 25th April 2013.

Voting for yourself is entirely at your own discretion. I'm frankly sick of discussion on the matter, so any in here will be deleted. If you want to vote for yourself, go for it, but I personally wouldn't do that unless I genuinely believed mine was the best.

The winning poem will be stickied for a week in the poetry contest.

Oh, and if I catch anyone cheating, their entry will be removed from the contest and you will be unable to enter a poem into the contest for a month. Sorry to be such an ogre about this, I don't want to be, but rules are rules and are in place for valid reasons. If you can not follow the rules, you face the consequences.

Best of luck to all entrants, and happy voting.

    Slack Key Guitar
    By Sword

Slack key guitar strums softly through the night,
an undertone to a perfect sun set.

Nocturnes whispered softly on quiet winds,
pierce the veil of beach side tranquility.

Take me back to those days on Oahu,
where waves roll and caress the smooth beaches.

Slack key guitar was the cure to my woe,
in those happy days of long long ago.

    Cadence...
    A heady, dark pulse.
    Stones, polished castanets, marking...
    Cadence...Set.

    Sway...
    Always pale, aloof...
    Drawing in, casting out.
    Sway...She holds.

    Hum...
    High and sweet and clear.
    Crickets, reeds, and peepers...
    Hum...Choirs in the night.

    Fly...
    A single voice.
    Lilting and clarion...
    Fly...

    Words...
    To a nocturne given.
    A siren on the shore.
    Words...Of wonder.

    Symphony...
    A tide of song.
Such is the glory of the sea...
    Symphony...of nature.

Just as a tide should be...

    Natures True Beauty
    By ChaosReigns

    A night to remember
An hourglass sat beside the beach campfire
    Friends talking amongst themselves
Staring at the ships out to sea

    Toasted marshmallows and hot cocoa,
Life would be perfect if it were this simple,
A humming of tunes and stark laughs,
    Delight filled the air

    The stars shine bright,
    Bouncing off the water
    Reflecting onto the cliffs
    Creating a myriad of patterns
    A rare sight to behold.

    The surf, Natures true robe
    Lit up at night
    Making for special moments,
    And a night to remember.

    Friends and lovers together
    Sharing stories of wonder
    They may part ways
But forever will remain those stories

We are but smoke and mirrors
    Reflecting on the sea
The night is where we come alive
    And the time to realise
    How natures true beauty
    Reflects in everyone,

    The Seafarer's Strife
    By seelifein69

    An atonal whisper sounds around
Near where the sea does meet the ground
Unheard to the laymen of the night
They shy away and call it fright

So leave me be, to hear, to see
    Music that’s accessible to me
To settle in amongst the sand
    Taking me to dissonant lands

No major, no minor, no maestro
    Mother Nature is the motif
Yet this orchestrated tune of life
Is the opera called ‘Seafarer’s Strife’

    Nocturnes by the Sea
    By Quoux

    Notice the wind's whispering wail,
Or the soothing shift of the sea.
    Could another curious creature exist
To have delivered such a mighty, shattering, midnight melody?
    Unknown to the night's
    Revolution to day,
Never would it have thought that a creature might stay
Ever so often though it may,
Singing by the shore's melodic sway.

    Because birds bid goodnight
    Yonder sea t'would it tell.

Testing the tide with it's toe,
hoping to hide in the sky when it's low,
Ever so softly singing its song.

See, you never would notice at night walking along
Every single small, simplistic, detail of
A soft sight of nocturnes by the sea.

    Ember
    By edamame

I stand and cannot hear the waves today
They have calmed in the aftermath of a great icy wind
The moon rises in the silence, glimmering
The light dimmer than the stars
    Of that summer we shared
Cold are my hands and cold is my breath
    The sharp pain in my chest dulls;
    Like an ember smothered,
A nocturne by the sea tells it to rest.

Every Morning After Watching the World Burn
    By tomfoolery

Every morning after watching the world burn
when the smoke still trickles out of the cracks in the pavement
and a faint trail of embers still lingers on the sunless streets,
I hop in the shower and try to wash the soot
from my fingertips, try to rinse the resin from my hair.
I change into clothes that still smell like smoke and
drink a cup of coffee that tastes like coals going down.
Ashes fill the sky, falling from charred palm trees and
landing on the waveless ocean, now reduced to
a sort of teal color that blends with the clouds
and smudges the horizon line into and endless mass of
    rolling smoke, and off-color blue.

    Nocturnes by the Sea
    By Admin

The heavy, lazy bass chord from the left –
The wispy, flighty solo notes – the right:
    Drag the schooner ever sooner to death;
Lift the mist into the pitch of the night.

    The heart harrowing vibrations sink;
The fleeting trilling of tugging tears climb.
As the gull dives into the darkened brink,
The raptor glides upon waters sublime.

Away it’s played upon the vessel’s bones,
And away it carries the listener’s soul.
Into obscurity, it sails from shore
To land upon the porch of blackened doors.

The Nocturnes by the Sea have taken thee –
Oh why does light and land forsaken me?
