Weekly Poetry Contest (94) Voting - Sink or Swim

Discussion in 'Bi-Weekly Poetry Contest Archives' started by Banzai, Sep 4, 2009.

    Weekly
    Poetry Contest
    Ninety Four
    Voting

The contest is closed, and voting shall now commence!

This week's theme (courtesy of Hindumaliman) is: Sink or Swim

Voting will end on Monday 7st September 2009.

Voting for yourself is entirely at your own discretion. I'm frankly sick of discussion on the matter, so any in here will be deleted. If you want to vote for yourself, go for it, but I personally wouldn't do that unless I genuinely believed mine was the best.

The winning poem will be stickied for a week in the poetry contest.

Oh, and if I catch anyone cheating, their entry will be removed from the contest and you will be unable to enter a poem into the contest for a month. Sorry to be such an ogre about this, I don't want to be, but rules are rules and are in place for valid reasons. If you can not follow the rules, you face the consequences.

There is no prize to be won here, you can not claim you are an award winning poet, so as you can see, cheating really is pointless here!

Best of luck to all entrants, and happy voting.

They say if you take short breaths
    and keep breathing short breaths
    you'll hold out longer
    when you go under.

    Steel is rapt – wrapped
    bent but – bendingfurther.
    Mother.

    Washing in.
    Washing in.
    Washoutoverme!

    Slick with oil.
    knuckles like pistons in oil.

    God. Thetaste.

When I joined up back in the summer
    (bright sun in my eyes)
of forty two I left a small town,
    a mother,
    (worn a soft perfume)
two toddlers, and for something better.
    (rusting in the hay field)
    (bright sun in my eyes)
    (worn a soft perfume)

    (slap) Haha!
    Laugh.
    (Slap)
    Haaa!
    Cry.

    keepbreathing.keepbreathing.
    Mute - deepbubbles.

    When I was a kid
    (Scratched knees.)
    I got into fights.
    (Shivering fits. Bloody.)
I don't know why I ever did that.

Pressure of the door is equal.
    (likesosimplelikesosimpleliketheytellyouliketheytellyoujusthadtowaitjusthadtowait)
Float outside like a bright god beaming huge and terrible and made of fire.
    A pulse.
    A breath.
    Lay on my back
    in this black gleaming field.

    Sinking.
    A feeling most foul.
    Falling through froth,
    Fading.

    Why swim?
    Fight to finish,
    Force through factories,
    For filth?

    F*** fighting.
    I want to fall,
    Far and fast.
    Finally.

    Ace every single test
    to make your parents proud.
    Play only classical music
not that other junk out loud.

    Run the longest marathon
    and go the extra mile.
    When winning the big race
    don't forget to smile.

    Be careful what you eat
got to keep that figure thin,
Make sure there is less fat
    than of bone and skin.

    Don't stay up too late
for the big game in the morning,
    Doesn't matter what you want
or what you could be learning.

    Straighten out that suit
    put on a fake smile,
As you rule the next meeting
    in nothing but style.

    Play to their tune
    without missing a beat.
    Dance a stiff waltz,
but don't fall on your feet.

    Better learn how to swim
before you're thrown in the water,
Once you're out of the picture
    they'll find someone better.

    i can
    see
    the sink
    and your wife
    washing the dishes
    of that pasta
    she made for you
    and the kids.
    she's so
    lucky
    i'm so
    timid
    i should
    have told you.

    Dozed Off.
    I'm awake now,
    Train's almost there.
    You're outside.
    Waiting for me,
    I don't know what
    To Think
    Maybe that:

    its
    cold
    in this water
    you put me in
    there
    see
    i said it so you
    should swim out here,
    so I can be
    five inches
    from your eyes,
    four inches
    from your nose,
    and one inch
    from your lips.

    So Here together,
    Amongst the reeds
    Of advertisements,
    And the smell
    Of the traveler schools
    We Dive.

    He who treads lightly
    in the water of life
is a fool among fools and will find he has
    drowned.
    But he who toils blindly
    in joy and in strife
to seek land will find life for in life land is
    found.

    The ghost ship
    By DragonGrim

They say there are fish in the sea
And that some are looking for he
Where are the faces he once knew?
Are memories real, or just through

The sea, a woman in the past
whose winds can break the masts
and drive the aimless ship aground
Tattered sails make the woeful sound

But as she does, the sea recedes
and the ship lies-to in the lee
of a wall of time and distance
What has come of long persistence?
Other than the sight of strange waters
in remote lands that seem to shimmer
like an illusion, like a dream
But all things are not as they seem

Livid waves climb as high as hills,
and the yearning ship soars and reels
Salty water on the wounds that won’t heal,
splintering wood, the ship lost will

But what of her captain, he sees
land afar. He clings to debris
His mind turned to his shipwreck
Could he swim? He didn’t know yet
