As long as we have enough rye bread and savusilli to go around we'll be just fine. damn, I can't wait to get back to Sweden.
@Michael Collins To this day, I haven't tasted anything with silli/sill -- or herring. Dad always tried to make me it eat Abba sill (figures they'd call a Swedish herring product Abba, huh?). I thought it looked and smelled bad, so I swore I'll never even taste it. I'm curious/impressed, did you learn all those Finnish words in Sweden?
I am Swedish by birth and go back there at least once a year, I grew up in Italy. Being absolutely in love with the Scandinavian cuisine, Finland has much to offer. Too bad I've only been there once, as a kid, and don't really remember much. Those are just some simple Finnish words you easily pick up living in Sweden, my favorite has always been suklaakastike, I used to drench my ice cream in chocolate topping.
I've lived in Sweden my entire life and I haven't learnt more Finnish than the words perkele and sauna. But then, I live almost as far from Finland you can come while still being in Sweden...
There are a lot of Swedes or Swedish-born here, then. That's cool. I don't understand the Swedish they speak in the Skåne area at all, but on the other hand, Swedes who hear finlandssvenska are pretty horrified too about the manner we abuse the language. I work in a predominantly Swedish-speaking area right now and the cadence and intonation of their Swedish is identical to Finnish, and like every fifth word is Finnish too. Sounds funny
I don't understand Skånska either, and I live like only a few Swedish miles from the border to Skåne. Haven't heard much finlandssvenska except for the occasional boring movie I've watched in school and then I don't think it was real "hard core" finlandssvenska, but from my experience it sounds quite hilarious.
It really does. I used to work in a book store where plenty of customers were svenska talande bättre folk and especially the younger generations often mixed Swedish and Finnish with some humorous results. And yeah, as far as Finnish quisine goes, I like many Carelian dishes, but I'll steer clear from silli and mämmi, thank you very much.
