'She's my Ten' – guilty as charged. The protagonist has subsequently fallen in love with the children of the world, opened orphanages, adopted Brangelina style.

I will be very angry if I don't win come second come third get mentioned by Mat. I am very angry anyway: my feet are sunburned.
    I have ice on mine.

This has been loads of fun. Well written, everyone, and good luck!

Okay, I just read Elenor's Curse. I'm not sure how it got past me, but I hadn't read that one yet.

Really liked the feel, very creepy.
The only thing that seemed off to me (besides the expected supernatural elements) was the cigarette catching everything on fire so fast. I would have liked to see some comment about how the fire caught unnaturally.

You're absolutely right. Having never started a fire I did wonder about that. Perhaps a bit of research wouldn't have gone amiss. I have a tendancy to rush these stories a bit, a habbit i'm trying to break. Thank you for reading.:agreed:

...I missed out a couple of prepositions in my crit of your story. Your story is like an outline - needs colouring in, the way your mind works you created a complex, maths mystery. Loads of people would love that, only tell me what the trooper is wearing, and a couple of your jokes, I think to carry me along. Remember, keep me happy in space.

I would have included my jokes, but unfortunately the kinda jokes i tend to put in, aren't appropriate for this story (or in general for that matter), and not nearly enough male characters :)

The more I think about your story, the more I like it.
First, I'm thinking ... Okay, we're gonna get some crazy supernatural killer showing up to slaughter everyone. Fun, if a bit obvious.
Then, I'm thinking ... Alright, we have an insane guy in the mix who's using the ghost story past as an excuse to work on his favorite hobby. MURDER!!!

Later, I get a little disappointed because it all turns out to be a dream.

At the end, you hit me with WHAMMO .... It was evil-supernatural witch after all.

Well played word slinger ... Well played. :supercool:

Thank you @doggiedude, that means a lot. When I'm writing these things there are certain places where I stop and think 'maybe that won't work' or 'maybe that's wrong or too much', and then I ignore myself and carry on anyway. Then, someone reads it and says 'that's not right' or 'that doesn't work' and I kick myself.

When will I ever LEARN!!!! :bigmad:

Wow, I was a little surprised that so far I guessed some correctly and some were way off. I was the author of Ten Inches. It was my first attempt at a short story competition and had a lot of fun writing it and watching the feedback of it and the others. Thanks everyone who said something nice about it and especially those who gave me some critiques to learn from. :)

My goal was the story was to slowly build and maintain a sense of anxiety.

@matwoolf - You should win a special prize for your reviews. You managed to do them all in character, as usual, yet made the points that needed made. WELL done you! Brilliant.

This is fun, discovering who wrote what. To some extent. Do I believe them all?

I think the standards were very high in this contest. I'm glad I didn't agree to judge. They won't find it easy, that's for sure.

    Tenterhooks, tenterhooks.....

It's still night time in the USA. Wait till @Wreybies has an almond croissant in his fist, espresso, I reckon. @Steerpike, more of a double skinny frappealpacino, or latte with sprinkles.

Who else is there? @Tenderiser - cocoa pops...

I'm in this thread because... the results are posted!

...unfortunately, because of the way the forum was set up for anonymisation, the thread needs to be approved before it will appear.

So actually I'm just here to torture you a bit more.

@matwoolf I'm on Crunchy Nut this week.

The authors were revealed to us yesterday evening, otherwise "Anonymiser" would have received all the prizes. :D

I only guessed a couple of them.

I assume a lot were quite surprising, I know mine was an out of character style choice due to what was given as the prompt :) but hey, I like to surprise on occasion

I thought "Ten of Swords" was very funny. I like murder mysteries, and I like writing that is funny, so this was definitely a story for me. I like puns, too...the ending with "TENse" and "You're suspended, Lancaster" had me laughing out loud. The idea of a strait-laced cop shutting down a colleague trying to be funny...is very funny!
