My question is this: What prevents a minor from setting their age to 17 or higher? There's really no way of policing this, so there's no way of keeping minors out of the erotica section.

    facebook log in?

Anyway, if under age people want to see erotica, there are a gazillion easier places to go without having to lie about one's age...

You don't need Facebook to join WF.

Well, members cannot change their age once they have joined, so it would have to be a deliberate act prior to joining, and there are sites dedicated to this that would seem much more a destination for such fraud than us, I would think.

Anyone else want to chime in about running the system like this?

When you register you enter your date of birth, and the forum uses that to prevent access. Your date of birth isn't editable. So assuming minors use their real age when signing up and assuming they didn't lie during sign up to get around the filter... that said, there's no way to completely prevent it. It's more of an obstacle.

I meant for new under age members

as already mentioned, WF is a lot of work for a new member just to get a cheap thrill

having said that, if it's possible to monitor the new member/critique rule, ie 20 posts etc - limit erotica viewing by post numbers?

Now there is an Erotic section? Awesome I have a place to post stories of my many sexual conquests. Now the hard part is picking which of the three to write about. :D

Would people be opposed to renaming Erotica to Adult Literature? It probably won't stop people from lying about their age, but it's more of a tasteful title.

Also would it be possible to hide the genre from unregistered members? They wouldn't lie about their age if they don't know about it to begin with.

It's possible to maybe limit it by age, but it would involve making a separate usergroup for all underage that mirrors the current New Member group with the critique rules. Could be done though. I'll look into it a little more. ;) Nice suggestion.

At first I was going to say a hearty 'yes' to this ...but then I went 'whoopsie.' This might be a step too far.

I think you already offer plenty of space for feedback, but when you get into the idea of 'open government' I get a bit nervous.

We all have the ability and the right to leave the forum if we don't like what's going on. We already have the means to let you know if something isn't to our liking, or if there is something we'd like to see happening. You already do offer polls to get our opinions on matters you need to deal with. However, it's ultimately YOU who runs the site, Daniel (along with your mods.) I don't know that I want that to change all that much.

I would hate to see this forum turn into something like a high-class restaurant, with a fantastic chef. A restaurant where—instead of ordering what he's carefully prepared for the day's special—his customers start demanding all sorts of other things that are not on the menu at all. I'm sure he'd listen and try to accomodate at first ...but I think he'd eventually get fed up.

I wouldn't want to see you being totally swamped by all the demands and counter-demands we might start making, if you give us lots more control here. I'd say, if it ain't broke...

I appreciate that. I imaged that the polls I have in this section would go into this new section (hopefully it'd get more eyes there). I was also envisioning sharing ideas to improve the site, and possibly coming up with community policies on things like rules for the resource section, etc. For example, in the supporter forum there's a thread titled "Your ideas/opinions on the future of WF" where I ran several ideas past supporters and got some great feedback.

It wouldn't be a section where I add everything people want, but instead, an area where I can run potential ideas by the forum and everyone here can have a say in some of the policies and such. I don't want to add a bunch of features no one will use and I don't want to not add features or policies that we should have. I guess that's where I'm coming from. That said, there probably isn't a need - just an idea. ;)

How about we have discussion threads for other sections of the WW? (Not just the erotica) We could even combine them. (I.E. maybe General fiction/Romance/Young Adult and Sci-Fi/Fantasy.)

That's basically what I mean in this poll when I say "by the genre" forums - forums to discuss writing specific genres. I added it for the erotica section because it's a special case. I'm open to adding those types of forums for other genres but I'd structure it different, probably as an independent "by the genre" forum with genre subforums outside the workshop. Thing is, I don't think there's presently enough interest to add them just yet.

I changed my mind. It won't be nested in the Workshop, but I'm going to give the genre forum a short. Prefixes for each genre, popular genres will earn their own sub-forum.

Have you guys thought of having an IRC? That could be a great place to bounce ideas and just chill out in general :)

I agree. I am not on Facebook because frankly I find the whole thing insufferably narcissistic and the monetization system objectionable (and I don't want potential employers stumbling upon some photo of me with white powder on my top lip or my knob hanging out).

    Please no Facebook log-ins.

Honestly, I spend way too much time on these forums as it is. If there was an IRC I don't think I would ever leave this place alone.

I would suggest Graphic Novels as a forum of its own. The style of writing required is different from a novel before you even get into the graphic side.
