    Help! I'm unemployed. =(

Discussion in 'The Lounge' started by Alice in Wonderland, Mar 9, 2008.

Currently I am in college from 9 til 4 most days. I want to get a job to get some cash on top of my EMA (Education Maintenance Grant (£30 a week)) but I can't seem to find anywhere that wants me. I recently applied for a job an Blockbusters in town which had a sign up asking for new recruits. I filled out a form, gave it in - in person I might add! - and it's been over a week and I haven't heard back from them...

    I feel a little downtrodden.

Give me some advice! It seems I'm the only one of my friends that wants a job but can't find work.

I can't give you any advice for finding a job since I have never gotten one myself, but good luck with it love, I am sure you'll find one eventually. :)

Cheers. D= I'm gonna ask my mates at college tomorrow if they know anywhere that I could apply. I hate filling out forms. xD

There is a new pub opened recently. I could apply in there... Or at the theatre if there is anything going.

    creative type jobs.

tutoring other students in some courses.
shopping for people. groceries, birthdays, clothing for men.
editing term papers. they write them you fix them.
set your own hours and price.
house cleaning for fellow students. everyone wants their place to look better when parents come.
charge to do laundry at the laundromat.

Try calling Blockbuster and asking to talk to the manager. Keep calling every couple of days until you get a firm "no." You have a better chance of getting a job if you constantly pester the people you want a job from.

Most jobs that I've ever gotten have come from constantly bothering the employer.

    This is good advice.

I'm in the same position as you at the minute, and I've been through 2 or 3 jobs.
Try your local Job Center, and just keep your eyes open for adds in shop windows.
    It's what I do.

Go for telemarketing. They'll take anyone. And since it's such a soul-sucking job, they usually have really great pay and benefits. I worked in telemarketing for three weeks. $500 a week plus commission, full health and dental insurance, paid time off, 401k. Would have been worth it if I didn't come home everyday feeling like the scum of the earth.

But that is the problem. Is your self-esteem worth less than $500/week + commission and benefits?

Personally, I'd prefer to recite, "Would you like fries with that?"

telemarketing will kill you dead within a week.

you could try registering with a few temp agencies. they can usually find you something fairly quickly but you have to harrass them constantly.

    good luck!

The only problem with that is I am recovering from a phobia of talking on the phone. xD I can't call people I don't know or talk to people on the phone who I don't know. =[ I get freaked out and nearly broke the phone once. I limit myself to calling for pizza or curry and talking to my dad. xD

I once applied for a telemarketing job though. I hated the woman who was to be my boss and had a go at her. P= I didn't get the job... I didn't even want the job. xD Everyone I knew was making me get it so I could afford to live. I came back home instead...

I think I'll stick with harrassing the blockbuster man/woman. xD
