A relative recently visited and left me some foreign currency (worth less than $20USD) in cash. What should I do with it? Can I get it exchanged into USD at an exchange place or is there a way to just deposit it into my bank account? Thoughts on what's most convenient for a small sum?
Most currency exchanges won't take small amounts and most don't take coin. But if I recall, there may be a few banks that do, not all of them though, you'd need to call and ask. Otherwise, put it in the drawer as a keepsake.
For that amount, I'd just keep it, but there's a coin dealer near here who will trade currency (for a fee). There may be one near you.
For me, I will just keep it as a collection. Most currency exchange traders won't bother with such small sum.
Depends also on what currency you're talking about. I live in a major, cosmopolitan city and yet I can't for the life of me find anyone who will trade me dollars for all the Kyrgyzstani som I have lying around.
Keep it around and let small children take it to school for show and tell. I've got a $250 Iraqi dinar note with Saddam Hussein's picture on it that keeps floating around the house. With any luck it will be worth something some day.
