What Would You Do In a Dream

Discussion in 'Character Development' started by nickbrookes1991, Jul 28, 2011.

My story is based on events that happen to the MC which will put him in trouble. I was wondering if any of you have got any suggestion on what he can do to get him into trouble. The question I am asking is 'What would you do in a dream if you knew you was in a dream and could control that dream?' There is no limit to what you would do but, you can not brake any 'Laws of Physics' and the MC cannot die.
My only thoughts were to start of with him tempting his fate, but I need something which would happen that will get him into trouble and wanting to get out.
    Any help is appreciated, thanks.

That's way too vague and open.

The people on this forum could come up with thousands upon thousands of "dreams" for you. None of which are likely to be useful to you because, quite frankly, no one will actually know what it is you want for your story.

Hell, judging form your post, it looks like you don't know what you want for your story. If you even have a story at all.

We can help you in difficult parts of your plot, but we can't (won't) create to story for you. That's your job.

Then again, maybe I've misjudged things.

If I could control my own dream? Supermodels. Supermodels everywhere.

If I knew I was in a dream I'd probably try something like robbing a bank because I'd like to experience the rush without actually committing the crime. I don't know if that would help your MC, but it could be something that could get him into some trouble. Perhaps he could almost get shot down during the robbery and make him want to get out. What you are asking for is quite vague, but there's my opinion.

I agree. It is definitely way too vague.

I just don't understand how the series of events you want to have happen, that land your MC in trouble, has anything to do with a lucid dream.
~What kind of trouble do you want him to end up in?
~How does the dreaming come into play?
~If he's dreaming, why follow the laws of physics?
~What do you mean by 'tempting his fate'?

Please clarify, and maybe some more WF people can help you out. I dislike repeating myself, but I have to agree with MRD again. Your post is just too vague for anyone to really help nudge you in the right direction when you haven't given us a good enough starting point for brainstorming.

Dumping the laws of physics is about the first thing you do in a dream. :p It would suck to realise you're dreaming and to suddenly find yourself locked in a world exactly as dull as our own except you know it's not real.

Sounds like Inception that is simply called a lucid dream, and they do exist.

Asking someone for an idea on a story isn't your story after all.

    That is all.

I would hug my love interest and tell him how I feel.

That is my answer, thus, the question is indeed vague...

Ever see the show called The Buried Life?
If I had the balls to do anything they do on that show and get away with it, I definitly would.
I would be an extension of who I am now.
So you're character could bring everything up a notch, so to speak?
    Verbal fights>fist fights
Urges to steal>breaking into the whitehouse
Hitting on a hot girl>hooking up with her
Everything is elevated until you're MC is beating the shit out of a cop after stealing his car and driving around smoking weed in the front seat.
If I were you, I'd write about you're main character as a person, walking around the street every day, going to a 9-5 job, and see what comes up there, then with that explore what he would be like in a "I'm never going to die" badass world.
