    I need a latin/greek name

Discussion in 'Character Development' started by osu45d, Dec 15, 2013.

I am currently writing a dystopian sci fi novel and i need a surmane for my protagonoist, his first name is Cassius which is relivent as his namesake was the leader of the rebellion against Caesar and this character will lead a rebellion.

i would like a name with latin/greek infulence as the city whilst post apocyliptic is based on the period of classical antiquity however due to some germanic or nordic might be interesting.

If I understood you correctly, you are searching for Greek surnames that are Latinized. I found the following and list their meanings. There are more though I don't think you are allowed to put links in posts on this Forum. Feel free to message me for more information.

    Democritus "judge of the people"
    Irenaeus "peaceful"
    Nicanor "victory"
    Pancratius "all power"
    Theocritus "judge of god"
    Zoticus "full of life"

Sorry, to clarify I wand names which are either derived from Greek or roman names. Or a mix of the two. Some germanic or Norwich influence would be OK too.

The main thing I need is a good surname for a guy named cassius

As Cassius is a Roman name I would suggest a latin family name.

    Can I propose Argillus.

Argillo is the latin for clay.

This would give you Cassius Clay.
    Gerrit? :)

Roman names usually had three components - the first name, the clan name and then the family name.

There's a wiki page on the subject: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman_naming_conventions

Metropolitus is a real Greek surname. To make one up you might try Zoupomolus, Siriukides or other such combinations. You might grab a Greek-English dictionary and hack some Greek words together with endings like those and names like "Gus."

    (I have some Greek relatives...)

why would your character need to have a surname of different origin from his latin first name?

as with most sci fi novels this one is rooted in history, Aincient sparta/rome in this case, thanks for you advice but im thinking that 2 syllables would be best and it would be best to understate the greek/roman aspect without cutting it out

That's usually where I go to find names for settings not in the US or the UK, but in some other part of the world. Though extensive research on the names might be required. The Greeks and Ancient Greek historians alike would probably be pissed if you named your character Leonidas Sophocles for example. Then again, you're writing a dystopian sci-fi, so maybe you can get away with it easier than someone writing a historic fiction novel.

Since you're searching for a character with a Latin/Greek name, I might suggest looking into the Greek world when Rome took over. See what their names looked like.
