    Deciding on a character name

Discussion in 'Character Development' started by ToeKneeBlack, Jun 28, 2014.

My secondary protagonist is a 12-year-old boy with super intelligence who creates a suit which grants him invisibility and has powerful electromagnets in the boots and gauntlets.

As a result, I had given him the in-story nickname of "Tesla Kid", but I'm starting to think this sounds silly. Would "Teslageist" sound better? I prefer this as it incorporates the key features of his suit without making him sound like a child.

Which name do you think sounds better?

Just call him Telsa (tell-sa). Its not Tesla but close enough to pay homage.

Telsa sounds feminine, like "Elsa". It would for a gender swap version of the character from an alternate universe story line I've got planned.

I would call him Tesla as a nickname. Straight up.

The main character often calls him Tesla, but with his OCD he gets annoyed at his name being shortened, at least at first.

Maybe I could go with Tesla and she calls him "Tes" for short for the same purpose. You've given me something to think about.

LOL. First of all, I like your ideas.
Secondly, I'd recommend you to use Tesla Kid as a nickname, but as for his real name, you should choose [IMO] something like Artemis Fowl.

Thanks, Veo, you've got a pretty good set-up for a story yourself.

I've already picked his real name - Boris Petrov. Though I like the sound of Artemis - it sounds like a strong name. It could work quite well on a character I have planned for a later book in the series.

Boris is more of an inventor in this instance, though the original meaning of his name means "One who fights for justice".

I like plain old Tesla. It doesn't sound as corny as the other choices.

I should have left the poll open a bit longer. Looks like Tesla and Teslageist are currently tied.

Though he was originally called "Captain Magnetic" in the first draft.

Remember that Petrov is a Russian surname. If your character's ethnicity corresponds, then you're okay.
