Where and when do you come up with your best ideas?

Discussion in 'General Writing' started by S S, Sep 28, 2014.

For me, it's on the bus to college in the morning or in bed trying to fall asleep at night. What about you?

This also happens to me. But another source is the shower, and when I'm driving a long distance. There's some kind of magic that goes on when I'm behind the wheel for an hour or more.

I also get mad creative when I hold my 12-string guitar in my hands. Things get weird when that happens.

The main thing, though, is that I get my best ideas when I'm supposed to be doing something else. If I'm at work, thinking about control systems and such, my mind always drifts to my stories. This goes back to my university days. I used to have to do assignments for grades, but I'd always be thinking of my songs or my stories. I was, it seems, strongly motivated to do whatever I was not supposed to be doing. This is still true today. Give me an engineering job and I'll be a productive creative writer. Give me nothing, and I'll probably sit here wishing I could play hooky. :)

The bad thing about getting ideas when you're about to fall asleep, you also get ideas like, "Oh, I used 'a' instead of 'an' ten pages ago, better get up and fix that immediately."

I get most of my ideas while running or walking. I have trouble concentrating while sitting down.

Usually I get them when I'm washing the dishes or swimming or working in the garden. But it could be anywhere, anytime. The worst is if I'm cooking something and it only needs another couple of minutes when the idea strikes, but the iPad is far, far away and I can't leave the stove because the dinner would be ruined. To eat or to create, that is the question :D

Ideas usually come to me when I'm reading. I guess that's one reason why so many published writers recommend constant reading to aspiring writers.

I'll tell you when and where I'm not when the best ideas come:

Sitting down in a chair with my iPad on my lap with all the free time in the world.

If I need an idea, all I have to do is lay on my stomach. It's become a trigger for me (for reasons you really don't want to know). Roll onto stomach, muses show up. Because I know this, I'm never lacking in ideas. I simply write while on my stomach.

My writing ideas come to me without any warning no matter where I'm at or what I'm doing they come to me.

for example I was on my way to a doctors appointment recently and a bunch of character names came to me.

So I took out my Moleskine notebook and wrote them down I ended up with two pages of Character names.

Once you start physically writing, the ideas come. That said:

My ideas come at the most random flipping times and often are an amalgam of dozen scenes/ideas that I thought of and suddenly they all click together as one whole piece.

dreams--or at least I get the best inspirations for stories from my dreams; the actual dreams themselves tend to be... unworkable. (GIANT SPACE MANATEE)

Best ideas - hard to say, I never know what will be a best idea or just meh. I usually come up with ideas when I'm watching something or reading something. Even it's junk I'm constantly contrasting my own opinion/view with what I'm seeing. Kinda like when you're tasting a new recipe and your mind is working overtime on what you'd do with it - new ingredients, new techniques.
Just recently I got an idea from watching an old Snorks cartoon mainly because I was irritated that the little Smurf ripoffs were using FIRE torches under the water.

Maybe they were using magnesium torches? Now if they used an electric welder underwater I can understand your irritation. :)

You know all those precious ideas certain forum members keep worrying others will take? Yeah, I steal all those.

Nothing so brainy - later on they roasted marshmallows. I kept thinking of all the possibilities of what they could use but they weren't even as inventive as the Flintstones - the bee in the clamshell that could somehow trim Fred's beard.
